Lady Cajuns - Whitney Dunlap commits to Louisiana

The University of Louisiana LAdy Cajun basketball program received their second verbal commitment from a high school senior, when Bishop Sullivan shooting guard Whitney Dunlap gave her pledge.

“I’m very excited with my decision to attend UL,” Dunlap said. “I’m getting the opportunity to achieve my dream of playing on the next level with a Division I-A program.”

The 5-8 Dunlap averaged 22 points and shot 48 percent from the 3-point line last year en route to leading the Lady Warriors to the 4A quarterfinals where they were defeated by Peabody.

“UL is a great choice for Whitney,” said Lady Warriors head coach Tami Robertson. “After meeting the head coach for the first time, I knew that she’d be in great hands.”

Bishop Sullivan basketball player Whitney Dunlap didn't want the drama of recruiting overshadowing her senior season.

Dunlap, a 5-foot-7 guard ended any speculation by committing to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette recently.

"I really liked the coach and the team," Dunlap said. "I just thought it was the best place for me."

Dunlap, who led Sullivan to the Class 4A quarterfinals last spring, said she also considered Southeastern Louisiana University and Middle Tennessee.

As a junior, Dunlap averaged 21.1 points and 4.5 assists per game. She made the All-District 6-4A team and was part of The Advocate's All-Metro team.

Dunlap plans to sign with the Cajuns during the November signing period. Dunlap said she has already met the NCAA's academic qualifying standards.

Dunlap is considering a major in sports management. Making an early college choice gives Dunlap time for another option -- focusing on her senior season. Sullivan figures to be one of the area's top 4A teams again.

"I'm glad it (recruiting process) is over," Dunlap said. "Now I can concentrate on my senior year. That's important to me."

Bishop Sullivan girls top Broadmoor, 51-41

... Bishop Sullivan (12-8 overall) improved to 2-0 in district play behind balanced scoring and outstanding defense in the second half.

Dunlap, a University of Louisiana at Lafayette signee, combined with Tomchek and Daily to score 49 of Bishop Sullivan's 51 points. Dunlap led the way with 19 followed by Tomchek with 16 and Daily 14.

Sullivan is playing with some its own confidence. After a series of tough early-season losses to a who's who of top teams like defending 4A champion Cabrini of New Orleans, 5A power John Ehret of Marrero and two Livingston Parish 5A teams, Denham Springs and Walker, the Warriors have rebounded.

Sullivan has also rebuilt its lineup after the graduation of three starters. University of Louisiana at Lafayette signee Whitney Dunlap is a 5-foot-7 guard who averages 20 points per game for the Warriors.

NEW ORLEANS -- Whitney Dunlap scored a game-high 40 points, leading Bishop Sullivan to a 51-42 victory over 10th-ranked St. Mary's in a Class 4A bidistrict playoff game played Thursday at Abramson High School.

Dunlap, a University of Louisiana at La. signee, had four 3-pointers.

Fourth-ranked Albany of Class 3A and fifth-ranked Dutchtown of 4A were also among the bidistrict winners.

Third-ranked White Castle and two-time defending state champion Southern Lab were among the Class 1A teams to claim impressive victories to open the Louisiana High School Athletic Association's girls basketball playoffs.

In Class 2A, 10th-ranked University High upset fifth-ranked Rapides.
