I was, and it was magical. To...us. To the outside world...no one gave...pardon my French...a flying ____. Then when we repeated it 3 more times...they were still less impressed. I'll tell you why...we lacked progression. We never took it to the next level. We slammed head long into our ceiling, and then we crashed and burned in 2015. This is what separates us from the "fast riser" programs. They built on what they accomplished, we didn't. Now as someone mentioned, the football team isn't 100% at fault for that because of the administration...and I 100% agree with that. But...the football team does deserve some of the blame. Recruiting had it's problems. Coaching had it's problems. I'm sure someone will call Hud's name eventually...and on the current course of the team and our administration...I fear it will be as an assistant at a P5 school.
Not one team in America can avoid "crash and burn" seasons. You miss on recruits all the time. Look at powerhouse teams like Texas, Michigan, Auburn, Nebraska to name a few. All had a few stinkers, multiple years of being down....it happens.
We aren't the SEC or BIG XII or ACC. We will not be a "household name" per say. Our 4 bowl wins were wired into how many tv sets across the nation? People had no idea what a Ragin Cajun was, then all of a sudden, boom.....4 years in a row those Ragin Cajuns are coming into their living rooms and beating "superior teams" on national tv.
The difference there is...when they have down times, they have a rich tradition and history to fall back on. We don't. When we crash and burn, it's manifest destiny to everyone that isn't us.
All those tv sets...watched another bowl game after the one we played in. To everyone else it wasn't special at all. It was just...another game.
