I am more worried about the QB knowing as much of our new offense as possible regardless of who is in the game. It was very obvious last year that JD was working with a very limited playbook. One can only assume it was because that was all that he knew. Ive never played QB but I would also think that almost 2 years into a system, I should be expected to know the majority of the playbook as a QB.

Pretty sure I could get more production on offense from the Tecmo Bowl playbook than we got last year.

I'm not doubting the potential for him. That is totally open. He's shown flashes of excellence. As I said his success relies on many other elements than his actual abilities.

Be careful defending performance on actual game experience. We've seen for example mediocre quarterback play at LSU. Les tries to not play youth.

Some guys have lots of experience on the bench like Gautier. Deemed lacking mental capacity to run the Bustle offence he mostly sat. Given opportunity by Hud he flourished.

Two full years riding the pine is plenty of time to learn the position. All he needs is a team and to execute.

I think everybody will be a little too full of hope entering this season. QB play will be a reason I don't think we will be where we want this upcoming year. Can Whomever wins the job play better than we think and lead us to a conference title? Sure. Anything can happen. I'm just saying that the numbers are not in our favor. Experience can make up for a lot of other attributes a player may not have. There is a lot to be said about a QB entering a year with a lot of snaps under their belt. They learn to play under fire and lead a team. I think you are discounting this. I'm sure all QB's we have are talented but I don't give out much credit until they've proven it by winning games. I want to see them beat teams that have game planned for them and we were able to adjust and execute. Talent or not, experience leads offenses more times than not and we don't have it.

There is always a learning curve at any position, but especially QB. My concern is the talent evaluation at the QB level. That position has been lacking for the past couple of years. TB couldn't throw very well his senior year, probably due to his previous injury, and the fact that he was our only hope at QB and no one to challenge him says a lot to me about recruiting. Then, last years train wreck happened. We need to see some passing production from that position to be able to win against higher profile opponents, ie; Boise St.

I never fool myself. And if you think the OL wasn't spectacular compared to the coaching job, you must be married to a coach. It doesn't take 5 poor coaching decisions to wreck an offense. But our coaching staff made 10. And no, Haack wasn't even close to bad... much less terrible. It's the most convenient place to lay the blame... because it always is when it comes to the offense. Cheerleaders blame it on the QB... he had the ball first... he scrambled and didn't pick up the yardage... he threw it and "missed"... he must have been to blame. Football for dummies.

Well, I can assure you as clear as the sun is hot, that if any entity should be saddled with the blame for our offense last year... it was the grown men called coaches. Most get to come back and get do-overs, while past players they recruited take the blame.

That farce last year was Hud and company... Nixon QB'ing, slamming Eli into a wall, WRs in horrific routes, dumb plays, worse play sequences, power football with an out of shape OL, no rhythm created between a passing QB and his receivers... it didn't take but one dumb decision to lose half the contests... but our staff deployed them all.

I'll try and forget what I know... and root for Hud to return to his glory years. But I know exactly what failed last year. Injuries? Granted. APC distraction? BS. Lockeroom problems? BS. Horrific coaching? Check mate.

Our passing game must evolve and is contingent on a few things.
1. Pass protection.
2. Our receivers running clean routes and holding on to catchable balls.
3. Our pass plays evolving past throwing jump balls.
4. Being able to throw the football to all areas of the field, especially the middle.
5. Having a QB that can throw farther than 10 yards and who can hit his target.
