    The 25 limit.

Only 25 scholarship athletes can enter a class at the same time. So the class that starts in the Summer/Fall of 2012 can only have 25 athletes. When you see a school sign more than that some may be counted backwards, some may not be eligible. Unfortunately, some are simply told that there is not a spot. Some will greyshirt and delay enrollment until next year.

IMO, I don't think you should be allowed to sign more than 25 on signing day. But the NCAA rule currently says 28, so the system allows it. I would imagine if you see any school with more than 28, they have signed JUCO guys in the early period that will be backcounted towards the previous year's class.

So Slappy, my question now is this: if there is a limit of 25 scholarship athletes at one time (specific semester); there must be a total number for a one-year period?

I want to believe you because that is what I thought; but I think there must be some type loophole for these previous year scholarships for kids already enrolled. Maybe if a player quits the scholarship can be transferred to anybody enrolled in school without any penalty.

Had we had several players greyshirt last year and then enroll fully for this upcoming year, they'd count on this 2012 class.

That is interesting; if a player greyshirts, is it mandatory he be given a scholarship the next year when/if he is fully enrolled? I suppose that is the primary difference between a greyshirt and a walk-on, preferred or not; they have to earn a scholarship if one is available for them. Is that correct?

  8. Default Senior LB Smith leaves Cajuns

Linebacker Jelani Smith no longer is a member of the UL football team, a school spokesman said Monday. The Abbeville High product left for "personal reasons" and "to take care of family-related issues," the spokesman said. Smith transferred to ...

Nope. Nothing is guaranteed and that's why a lot of kids don't like it because they are not assured of anything come the following year.

Any athlete signing prior to Feb.1 st NSD could count against the previous class. Any athlete signing between Feb. 1st and May 31st would count against this years class. Then you can sign greyshirts that could enroll part time and resgin with next years class. But Slappy is correct, you can only sign 25 new scholarship athletes in any academic year.
