    Default Sam Scofield

St. Thomas More High has produced a number of college football signees for the UL football program over the years. 2009 District 4-5A Defensive MVP Sam Scofield is the latest Cougar to receive an offer from the Cajun coaching staff.

Nothing is binding until signing day. He has plenty of time to come to his senses.

Scofield was in attendance Sat. night. I'm sure UL's play on the field and the lack of support in the second half by the fans sealed the deal for him.

I stayed till the end as I always do. I wish others would do the same.

The young man may simply have wanted to get away from home for his college career. Tulane probably sold him on the fun of living in what is an interesting city to many. As far as attendance affecting his decision, I doubt that seriously as Tulane figures are GREATLY inflated in that regard. They may be adderessing that through their early plans to build an on campus facility. This may have been more of a pro Tulane decision than an anti Cajun view.

Spoke with Sam a few minute ago. His quote:

"Just thought it (Tulane) was the right place for me. I was blown away at the visit I had two weeks ago. I love New Orleans and developed a special relationship with coach (Doug) Lichtenberger. He was the first coach I ever talked to, first person to send me a letter and email me. I've always had a knack to get out of Lafayette for college."

He added: "I feel like Tulane is about to turn that corner in becoming a good football team."

Given Tulane's problems getting fans to show up I doubt fan support played into the decision.

Text me last night with his decision, he had not spoken to Coach Lichtenberger about his commitment. He asked that I would not mention anything until he spoke with them after practice today. I kept my promise and I hope he does well, he his a good kid.

    UL Football Re: Sam Scofield

The St. Thomas More kids have good friends and former teammates at both UL and Tulane. My understanding is the way these recruits are being treated on their visits are night and day. I know UL's recruiting budget is low but when you talk to the kids and parents about their UL visit and a visit to another school UL is way behind. For instance, UL serves sloppy joes while Tulane has a fully catered affair in the Superdome. Little things means alot when you trying to get an 18 year old's attention. I am just not sure UL pays enough attention to the little details in their recruiting efforts.

You could remove "their recruiting efforts" and replace it with just about anything, and it would still hold true.
