A few terms you may want to know
- Century Oaks — Century-old oak trees, near the corner of Johnston and University Streets, which were planted Jan. 1, 1901 by the university’s first president, Edward L. Stephens
- Cypress Lake — University lake in the heart of the campus, between the Student Union and Hebrard Boulevard, which is a managed wetlands filled with cypress trees, alligators, turtles, fish and a variety of plants
- Dupré Library — Campus library named after Edith Garland Dupré, head of the English Department and one of eight teachers that first opened the university in 1901.
- Lagniappe — French for “a little extra.” Also a four-day event of live music, canoe races and other fun events in April
- The Quad — Popular student hangout behind Martin Hall that contains the Walk of Honor
- Ragin’ Jazz — Rated as one of the top 10 college dance teams in the nation, Ragin’ Jazz entertains at UL football and basketball games and community events
- Walk of Honor — Beginning near the south side of Martin Hall and encircles the Quad, the Walk is paved with bricks bearing the names of UL graduates
- Blackham Coliseum — Opened in 1948, the coliseum formerly served as the university’s basketball team, concerts and other public events
- Cajundome — A 12,800 seat arena on Congress Street that’s home to UL basketball games, concerts, WWE wrestling and more
- KRVS — Campus radio station that broadcasts at 88.7 FM (www.krvs.org) and features National Public Radio programming and numerous local shows
- La Louisiane — UL’s magazine, published twice a year, by the Office of Public Relations and News Services
- LITE — A three-story building with an egg-shaped section, located in the Research Park near Cajun Field, the Louisiana Immersive Technologies Enterprise is a $29 million center that specializes in supercomputing and other technologies
- Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum — Visual arts museum, named after Lafayette philanthropists, on East St. Mary Boulevard which opened in the spring of 2004
- Ragin’ Cajun — UL sports nickname that became a registered trademark in 1996
- SLI — Southwestern Louisiana Institute, UL’s name from 1921-60
- USL — University of Southwestern Louisiana, UL’s name from 1960-99
