What’s interesting to me is the eventual fallout. Clearly the governor wanted to make a political show of financial irresponsibility.
Well, if that’s the case, why not just say he’s fired because the AD signed Kelly to a ridiculously long contract no other school would do? Could easily support that.
Instead he threw a lot of misinformation (exaggerated claims of Fisher’s buyout being on Woodward and incorrectly identifying agents), and said a likely uninformed committee will handle the search. Without a highly respected president and AD, it will be hard for LSU to hire the best coach.
Now the school (and state) is on the hook for Woodward’s contract while spending a few million on the next AD. And I would imagine it will be very hard to get the same boosters paying Kelly’s buyout to do the same for an administrator most probably liked.
If Louisiana taxpayers weren’t gonna feel some hurt from this, I’d be all about it because “F LSU.” But unfortunately this is quite possibly wasted expense on the taxpayer tab.
So what it boils down to is the governor had an axe to grind and now big-time coaches are going to be really careful if not uninterested in what should be one of the best coaching jobs in the game.
If Jeff Landry is really the next Huey Long, maybe he can get us a stadium that identifies as a dormitory! Just like big brother🤔
