Southern Miss Band?

Does anyone know if Southern Miss band is coming to Cajun Field?

Also since it is a Band Thread. Was able to attend my sons Middle School Football game band, crazy thing is that in middle school the band plays at Football games, must be a North Louisiana thing, because the team they were playing against also brought there band. Which either times have change, but they were playing “Set it Off” and “Hot to Go” or in our case “Geaux”

Cant tell me that a middle school band is more up on it then our Pride of Acadiana?

Middle schools are usually close to each other, sometimes both feeding the same HS. Or maybe they play atr he same field either home or away

Yeah when i was in middle school it wasnt done, and i was a band nerd all through out Middle, High, and College. Not a problem just interesting gets them ready for High School Marching Band.

Never seen Middle Schools having a battle of the bands thing with “Set if Off” it was interesting! Lmfao it was great. What am I witnessing?

If a middle school can do it. which is traditional style. i dont know what else you would call dont want to offend anyone can pull it off we could also.

I know Southern Miss' band director from U(S)L BAND back in the '80's. I don't know the last time their band has come to CAJUN FIELD, but it wouldn't surprise me if he would want to bring them here this season.

Not really, but actually yeah kinda.

Last year, Cajun Field was unavailable so the Louisiana Music Educators Association created an event they dubbed as the official State Championship at McNeese. Showcase was produced by Lafayette Music and always treated (at least for the 30 years I've been around Band) as the de facto state championship.

The new event spans 3 weekdays and is much more compartmentalized than Showcase. It also casts the net wider and brings in categories for the "Traditional/Show style" bands instead of just the "Corps style" bands that did Showcase.

The event was well produced and well run last year. Unfortunately, being on weekdays and spread out, it just didn't feel like it carried the excitement that Showcase did with having all the bands in one place for a long Saturday.

By my eyes, Cajun Field is no longer suited for any Marching Band competition (it used to host 2-3 per year. District, Showcase, and sometimes DCI). With all of the elevated seating turned into premium boxes, there just isn't space to fit a few thousand people up high so they can get the full experience and see the drill as intended. I've also been told that UL has no interest in hosting a band event anyway, so f'em.

I'm biased as an LHS alum and current Band Dad, but losing Showcase was a real blow to the Band world. Lafayette is much more centrally located on a map and in terms of concentration of bands. Thanks for the LMEA for picking up the pieces and putting on a good event though. I just wish it was in Lafayette on a Saturday.

It’s crazy to think how much of a recruiting tool that event was not just for the band, but for overall university enrollment. You had thousands of high school students and their parents flooding the campus. Easily 20,000 people showed up band members, parents, prospective students. We hosted 30 bands, maybe more, all getting a firsthand look at UL. Losing that competition is a major blow.

If anyone on this board wonder why enrollment is down, i promise that is partly why!

As a Comeaux Alum, it was us and yall that would win it every year back in the glory days, i remember our band director gave us &hi” about tieing to Fountainbleau HS. LMAO!

After 23 years I thought about attending, guess if i want to go i guess i get to go to McNeese!

Like i previously stated my son is in Middle School wanted to show him or go to a real marching band event!

We use to joke when i was in Pride of Acadiana that we had more people for a Band Competition then UL did for a football game!!
