A few donors were invited to attend an open practice back in June. After talking to people who attended, I agree that Keller will be our main guy even though he won't be the leading scorer. He will get to the rim and be a better finisher than our recent lead guards. That will allow him to get lots of assists. In his interview with Kevin Foote earlier this week, Coach White mentioned Jaxon Olvera as a guy who will be a key as he is a three level scorer. He also has a decent handle. Bigs he mentioned as being "stretch 4 guys" were Dariyus Woodson and Sean Elkinton. Both will be expected to expand their game beyond just being 3 point guys. Jeremiah Evans missed much of summer with a hand injury. but Coach says he can be one of best big man in country within 2 years with a lot of work. In a similar vein, highly rated recruit Joshua Lewis can become one of the top players anywhere in a couple of years. Here is my very unqualified prediction of a starting lineup. Keller at PG, Olvera as the 2 guard, Lewis as the small forward, Woodson at the 4 spot, and Todd Jones at center. As the season goes along, Evans may take the starting spot inside.
Here are a couple of thought on the schedule. First, I believe we will have a conference game between the La Tech game and the Norfolk State game. No way we go over two weeks without a game in December. Last year we had a conference game on December 18. The road games at Lamar, McNeese, and La Tech had to occur as they played here last year and were home and home deals. You may see those return as home games in the following season (I know Tech may be in the SBC by then). The Tulane game is a home and home from comments Coach White made at the practice open to boosters in June. That means we will go to Tulane at some point in the future. I am guessing the home games against UNC Wilmington, and Norfolk States are also home and home deals. I am fairly confident the home games against SLU and Jackson State are buy games. Hopefully enough fans show up for those to justify the additional dollars we have to spend there vs playing schools like Loyola.
Enjoyed your two posts above, Mike. Can’t wait for this season… of course, after a 10 win football season. I’ve been watching U(S)L basketball since 1957… and have had my own season tickets since graduating in 1975. I kept my tickets the last two seasons, but basically refused to follow them other than when my grandkids begged me to go, which was for about 8 games in those two years. We’re back on track now, and I’m ready for it.
No need to focus on the past now. Lots of reasons for the struggles last season however that is behind us. Rehashing them along with criticism of the previous regime serves no purpose. I think all of those guys have landed on their feet and will do fine going forward. Today, we have lots of optimism based upon a strong class, good reports of offseason workouts, and what appears to be a decent schedule. However, we have not played a game as a unit yet and our head coach is in his first year anywhere in his role. He is very confident in his system but will probably tell you he can still learn some things. Thanks for the compliments on my earlier posts.
