Thread: Academic Goals

  1. #1

    Default Academic Goals

Our Provost shared some info on our planned growth to reach our goal of not only maintaining Carnegie R1 status but also moving from SREB status 2 to 1. Required to average 100 PhDs per year in minimum of 10 programs.
He said 2019-2021 was a difficult time to grow with COVID. Only four programs overall developed including UG.
It takes about 4 years to go from concept to implementation of a PhD program review process.
We now have 9 PhD programs. Goal is to have 14 by 2030.
    Background:
    Year. Number PhD
    2018-19 60 R1
    19-20. 66
    20-21. 72
    21-22. 91
    22-23. 90
    23-24. 84
    Forecast 2025/26/27. 100+

I believe our focus on expansion of our engineering programs with the new building, expansion in allied health and an interesting refocus of our Liberal Arts and Arts on community needs has potential for significant growth in research beyond the anticipated growth in pharmaceutical research in New Iberia.
I think 2030 is a watershed moment for us. Now in athletics…..

The Allied Health Center will be a large focus area. Don’t know about MDs anytime soon.

    /We offer doctorate degrees in:
Applied Language and Speech Sciences (Ph.D.)
    Biology, Environmental & Evolutionary (Ph.D.)
    Computer Engineering (Ph.D.)
    Computer Science (Ph.D.)
    Earth & Energy Sciences (Ph.D.)
    Education, Educational Leadership (Ed.D.)
    English (Ph.D.)
    Francophone Studies (Ph.D.)
    Mathematics (Ph.D.)
    Nursing Practice (D.N.P)
    Systems Engineering (Ph.D.)

I believe we’re proposing a PhD in Counseling soon. Later, one in Education & one in Liberal Arts. Later, Nursing and College of Business. Not sure how public the specific programs are. Total of five being thoroughly vetted internally. Surprisingly, both the UL system and regents agree that PhD programs have to have an application in the community/state. Research with a purpose. How about that.
Also a number of BS/BA and Masters programs being developed. All have to show need before they can even be proposed. Which is good.
