Absolutely disagree as it's mentioned in other threads on this subject. This is no where near the same move as LA Tech's move to the WAC. Not only did they make the move with little or no TV money, College Athletics is vastly different today than it was back in 2001 when they moved.
The SBC isn't pulling in the money like the PAC will be. Texas State's brand and perception is about to significantly increase with this move. The competition will be MUCH better than what we have in the SBC and it will pay off in recruitment, student engagement, alumni engagement, donor relations and academically.
AND if in a few years the PAC does say fall apart due to schools moving over to the P4, Texas State very well could be in that discussion and if not, they will be just fine because most people/schools/conference will want to be associated with a school/brand like Texas State. So nothing at all like Tech's move.
Who says Tech moving to the WAC was a bad move?
They spent two decades in a better conference than the Sun Belt and were able to reap the benefits of it. They made more money, played better opponents, had access to more and better bowl games, etc.
You can’t really play the what if game. You never know what the future will bring. You just have to make the best decision given the information you have in front of you.
Should we move to a better conference with better money and better opponents? Yes. Of course we should.
It gets even worse for Tech. They thought moving to WAC was good it was not. They thought moving to CUSA was good it was not. Now they are begging the SBC to take them back. They are not in a good position. SBC is in a great position to be the best G6 conference in football and baseball for years to come. That 2030-2031(maybe negotiated sooner with ESPN based on results) new TV deal will be alot better and be here before you know it. Just hoping we can get basketball on par with the rest of our sports.
AI states:
Yes, ESPN could potentially renegotiate its media rights deal with the Sun Belt Conference, but the current agreement runs through the 2030-31 academic year, according to the Sun Belt Conference. While the conference has expanded its deal with ESPN, including more linear opportunities for Sun Belt football and basketball, renegotiation would likely only occur if both parties agreed to terms.
Renegotiation:
Renegotiation would require both ESPN and the Sun Belt to agree on new terms, which could involve financial adjustments, increased exposure for the conference, or other changes to the existing deal.
Turned down more bowl games than any other school as well
I love your optimism, but the SBC will not be the best G6 conference in football and as much as we love our diamond sports, they don't move the needle when it comes to conference realignment. If that were the case, we wouldn't be an SBC school and Coastal would be moving up today. There will be three tiers amongst the G6 Conferences:
- Tier I: Pac-12 & AAC
- Tier II: MWC & SBC
- Tier III: MAC & C-USA
There's a reason why the tier I conferences have larger media deals than the rest. And when it's comes down to who represents the G6 in the CFP, ESPN & CBS will do everything they can to make sure their investment into their respected leagues will get the nod. Even though the SBC is also an ESPN property, their investment into the SBC is nothing compared to the AAC.
The most consistent comments/remarks on this site about the Pac-12 isn't that the SBC is CURRENTLY strong, it's the worry about the future of UL and the SBC. The next big movement is likely somewhere 8-10 years away when media contracts wrap up. If Memphis, Tulane and USF all go over to the ACC like it's rumored, then the AAC isn't at all different that the SBC now. However, the real fear that I and so many others have is that the AAC would likely grab App State, JMU, Georgia State, Marshall or even Coastal before UL. Do you really think if that were to happen that ESPN would be giving more money to the SBC that features FCS call ups and the ULM's of the world? Hell no.
I hope everything works out for us. I really do, but we can't sit around and wait for it to happen.
What is the valuation? There is no public number and from what I've read it's still a moving target because they are adding 2nd Tier Rights from other streaming services. While their total number will surely surpass the SBC, it's questionable at this time if it will be more than the current AAC contract. Which would explain the reluctance of Memphis and Tulane jump to the PAC 8.
Baseball and Softball do not move the needle at all. The new PAC is also better [perception] than the SBC in football. Also, SBC basketball will never even get close to the PAC.
We should be sending 72 virgins to the decision makers at the PAC to get ourselves invited with Texas State.
