Penn State is closing several of its campuses.

The UL System should consider doing likewise.

While it makes sense, it won't happen. Louisiana politics won't allow it.

Case in point, UNO. UNO is drowning in millions of dollars in debt and over the past decade enrollment has declined by over 60%. Yet the solution is to move UNO from the UL system to the LSU system. Our state leaders are unwilling to make tough decisions, like closing UNO or merging UNO and SUNO.

For context, most of these campuses have less than 1,000 students and are located in tiny cities.

This is not the same situation as Louisiana.

Louisiana schools are having financial struggles because the state govt. keeps slashing their funding.

Well when espn propped them up, not exactly sure why, since they tear down most other big 10 schools. Nobody else would have recovered so easily from such a bad scandal. I bet TSAB would still be covering up, with media help, if something similar happened there

While not the same situation, it speaks to the issue of too much supply and not enough demand. Louisiana has far too many 4 year universities, especially in North Louisiana. Universities will continue to see budget cuts because Louisiana is a poverty state that lacks the tax base to properly fund higher education.

Not only that, but schools like UNO are not collecting tuition from students who are hard up on paying and don't have scholarships.

That is a very interesting point. Does uno allow deferred tuition payments?? Are they self financing the debt rather than requiring students to get student loans?

I have wondered about that, why should outside entities fund the tuition upfront, let the schools be on the hook for the loans so it is in their best interest to ensure the student becomes a successful enteant into the work force....
If a car dealer financed crappy cars, the customer would just let it be repossessed

And, Northwestern State is now trying to get a law school.
