There is only R1 - rest assured there are not sub-groups of R1. Not sure what this table bolded some but R1 is R1. I am quite sure VaTech, UK, & NC State (all not in bold) do not have a PhD production issues. Having reviewed the Carnegie Foundation methods, it is only R1. And yes, the metrics were changed for this year, but UL was before and now is still R1. The one banner still flies.

10-4. Separation. Only part I don’t care for is the lower financial threshold. UL worked very hard to get there and it’s been slashed.

Agree about the spending threshold - expecially since we are way above $200M and well into the Top 100 public R&D institutions. Our USL has grown a lot and it is great to see UL being a major national powerhouse in academics/research!

We are R1-B1. Very high research but not enough PhDs to be in bold. Need a few more. And that won’t take long. Interesting that LSU is in same boat as we are. Hmmm.

The bold means AAU. Look at the B1G. Every school is AAU except Nebraska. They were AAU but lost it after their Med school became a separate campus.

Guess B-2 will always be fluid if living on the edge.

Notice they LOWER the financial threshold. Need to work on AAU.

If they increase your standing by having more PhDs how do they factor that in to ensure schools just dont "give away" phds to move up. Is there a spot check on dissertations, is there a general percentage of how many that go up for it pass

There are numerous checks of quality within PhD programs. Many are internal but they are pretty solid. External accrediting efforts also review and evaluate PhD programs thus providing a good quality check. In general, most PhD programs within the US are solid. I would estimate about a 60/70% completion rate but a higher pass rate. Many students just do not stay in the programs all the way through passing for a wide variety of reasons.

We are not losing R1.

My understanding is that we will reach SREB1 by 2028.

As for Tech, I heard (not my best source) they are talking to ULM about dropping down and re-joining the Southland. Sounds fishy.

Anyone else heard this?
