So do we take the R-1 banner down? Or spray paint and turn the R into a B?
56 R-1 big boy universities “broke away”
Tulane only R-1 in Louisiana.
This change was known to be coming last year.
What happened? Did we loose the R?
This is what I see for Sunbelt.
4 schools.

In 2023, it was announced that the Carnegie Classification System would again be revised for the 2025 classifications. R1 institutions will be defined as those that (1) have $50 million in research expenditures, and (2) grant 70 research doctorates.
UL made it before the change, but now demoted. Guess that banner needs to come down. Maybe put one a CF…
Interesting TSAB doesn’t dole out 70 doctorate degrees a year. Maybe a PhD in “vehicular driving” could help in many ways. They have a long history of poor athletic drivers.
Kinda like NCAA FB reorganization.
The name changed, we are not demoted.i say 2 banners
We are still R-1.
We are R1-B1. Very high research but not enough PhDs to be in bold. Need a few more. And that won’t take long. Interesting that LSU is in same boat as we are. Hmmm.
I don’t believe MD’s or JD’s count toward the doctorates required.
There is only R1 - rest assured there are not sub-groups of R1. Not sure what this table bolded some but R1 is R1. I am quite sure VaTech, UK, & NC State (all not in bold) do not have a PhD production issues. Having reviewed the Carnegie Foundation methods, it is only R1. And yes, the metrics were changed for this year, but UL was before and now is still R1. The one banner still flies.
