Hypothetical here. Lets say we hired Clay Helton who is now at Ga. So. for the same amount we are paying Des, would people be saying it was a budget hire? They make roughly the same now.
Vic has said we hired him because we couldn't afford anybody else, including Napier who was here apparently. Most of us who were critical of the hire feel this way. It wasn't his time and we had so much momentum and attention from the previous several years that it's hard to roll back and hire a guy who had never even been a head coordinator at the collegiate level. Honestly, that's the critique.

As Jay always says, he likes to be a first guesser, not a second guesser. Regardless of how this plays out, and I hope it plays out well, the fact that Des was inexperienced at that time in our program's life is a fair and valid argument to question the hire.

In the whole discussion about Des’s salary and other options, you can generally see who has the “know your place” mentality. It’s more than one person. The “we can’t do that here” philosophy is strong.

Clay Helton, without his buyout money from USC, would command way more than what his GSU salary is. That is not his market value.

Who was knocking on Billy's door before we came calling? No one, that's who. He was the offensive coordinator at Arizona, who had just fired its head coach and hired Herman Edwards. As to would anyone else have hired Mike, you are damn straight they would. Tim Rebowe had no experience as a college coordinator and was only a position coach before taking the job at Nichols.

Mike is one of our own, and it is time for some of you to get over it. Two threads and countless blah, blah, blah, and buts.

He may have been able to get an FCS job like Rebowe but there is zero possibility that Des would have been hired at another FBS program. Rebowe as well would not have been hired at an FBS program.

This ain't Nicholls. This is a division 1 job.

Got it, anyone who has been our coach for a season and two games is Dr. Authement. Thanks!

Nope. I'll be pleasantly surprised if Mike is successful here because I don't think he has the experience necessary for the job. We could have hired better, and we should have. That's my point.

When I think about past administrators at Louisiana, I think one of the best was Dr. Gary Marotta. He wasn't a Louisiana guy, but he became one and made our school better.

When I think of athletic administration, I think immediately of Terry Don Phillips and Bryan Maggard. They weren't Louisiana guys, but they came here and made our programs better.

When I think of head football coaches, Billy Napier was the best we've ever had. He wasn't a Louisiana guy, but he became one and made our school better.

Athletic in-breeding, like educational in-breeding, leads to some messed up thinking and bad habits. We've always done it this way versus let's try some fresh, new ideas.

In our current athletic environment our university needs a coach who win championships, who can hold onto talent, and who can energize the fan base. The Desmo hire did none of that. We can disagree, but that I hope you don't mind that I share that in this forum.
