Boca Raton - Together since they arrived on FAU's Boca Raton campus in 2005, wide receiver Cortez Gent and quarterback Rusty Smith turned into a formidable duo last season.
Smith threw for 3,688 yards and 32 touchdowns, and Gent had 1,082 of those yards and nine of the touchdowns.
But both suffered from slow starts this year, as FAU went 1-5 before things began turning around.
Gent had the best game of his season last Saturday with seven catches for 116 yards and two touchdowns in the 46-13 win over North Texas.
That followed another two touchdown game for Gent, who caught the game winner in the final seconds of play against Louisiana-Monroe.
That play was reminiscent of last year, when Gent caught a touchdown pass in the final seconds of regulation that allowed FAU to tie Louisiana, a game FAU would win in the first overtime.
