Anyone else weary of the transfer portal already. With the new immediate eligibility runs it seems like pro sports without contracts. Just looking at softball, baseball and basketball, it just looks like a revolving door already.
I am. But I also feel for student athletes (seemingly more like semi-pro athletes now-a-days) in that they should have the freedom to decide where they want to attend school, whenever. Especially in the event that a coach that they committed to (kids buy into coaches first, schools second) accepts a job offer elsewhere.
Not sure if they can make any sort of amendments to the rules now that the cat is out of the bag, such as a restricted transfer portal. Where student athletes are allowed to enroll immediately if a HC leaves the program, otherwise they have to stay for a minimum of two years? I dunno, wish we could strike a better balance between student athlete freedom and athletic programs getting a little more stability in their rosters.
^^^This. An absolute killer for the non P5 programs. Regardless of the sport, a coach can build a strong program and now with players able to be paid openly, poaching will be the norm. This will make some teams a contender to a pretender overnight.
We’ve seen the flip…the student-athlete is now the athlete-student.
I’m not ready to say this rule is a G5 killer. Small sample size, but so far this rule has been a net benefit to our program. We’ve gotten more talent from G5 schools than we’ve lost to the portal.
And when you consider there will always be a greater number of talented players recruited to P5 schools, I can see this trend continuing. For every G5 standout that wants to move up, there is bound to be even more P5 talent tired of sitting the bench.
I just have to wonder why a G5 school would even bother recruiting and signing a highly talented high school kid though when they are highly likely to bounce after a year or two. Seems like it would be better to focus on poaching disgruntled P5 kids since you only get one free transfer. Our new transfers are essentially locked in with us. Our high school recruits aren’t.
