Now, if you count that record three times for teams we played in a weekend series and two times if we played them twice, by my math our opponents record per the RPI was 34-35.

Yep. Sweeping UTA at home (by itself) cost the Cajuns .00355 in RPI. Not playing them would have resulted in an RPI of .56032 (still a modest drop due to opponents) ... presently good for #49. Also, part of the ranking fall was simply due to teams in the vicinity of the Cajuns last week, passing the Cajuns.

Yes, wrong. :-)

What you want for Texas State and Georgia Southern is to maintain that Tier 1 RPI ranking ... and to some degree a RPI Top 25 (ranking). This is such that the Cajuns can secure a decent Top 50 and Top 100 RPI record. Other than that, it will not really affect the Cajuns' RPI if they lose conference games. It is not an exact equal offset (Ex. if Georgia Southern had lost to Troy last weekend) ... it depends on the precise effect on both teams' WP%. A Georgia Southern loss to Troy could actually have a very small benefit to the Cajuns' RPI. But whatever the case, the difference would be quite small ... you can essentially consider it net zero.

Conference finish is very important. The committee will also look at total conference record ... which includes postseason conference tournament games. Conference finish is why it is important for Texas State and Georgia Southern to drop some games. A couple of Texas State losses along the way and simply winning the series this weekend would have meant passing Texas State in the standings (tiebreaker) ... and a shot at the regular season title. Now the Cajuns must sweep the top performing team this season on the road. Simply making up one game on Georgia Southern is all that is needed to make use of the tiebreaker (Cajuns' favor) and vaulting the Cajuns in front. With their sweep this past weekend, Georgia Southern merely has to keep pace with the Cajuns against Little Rock and UTA to close the season.

As such, unless something unusual happens, third place is the best the Cajuns can expect.

Something that does has me concerned (RPI ranking aside) ... the Cajuns are presently fourth in the Sun Belt pecking order when it comes to at-large bid prospects. Even if they have the RPI ranking in line with that of Texas State and Coastal Carolina, they are only 4-7 against Tier 1 (13-13 vs. Tier 1 and Tier 2). So this weekend is not just about RPI ranking ... it is about getting some very important Tier 1 RPI wins. Coastal is 7-7 in Tier 1 and Texas State is 6-6.

There are also not a lot of good prospects for Cajun opponents (where the Cajuns won) of moving into the RPI Top 50. UC Irvine is the closest at #61. But I do not think they have the remaining schedule to get there. Taking 2/3 vs. UCSB this past weekend would have been big. South Alabama at #69 has an outside shot, but they would need to get hot. They have the remaining schedule (Tulane and Coastal Carolina ... as well as Sun Belt Tournament). Meanwhile, Louisiana Tech at #50 is on the edge of falling out. Of course, they have a slightly better resume at this time ... so you do not want them to do well on that front.

The series in San Marcos this weekend is huge.

Very small benefit to beating them twice (only because these are road games). But the risk/reward ratio is simply not there, for sure.
