Men's NCAA Soccer Championship
Marshall, out of the SBC, is playing for the National championship right now on ESPN+
We have a great opportunity to start a men's program and be in the best conference in men's college soccer.
Why would you not?

I imagine money to start a men's soccer program and money to start another women's sports program.

They have a whale of a men’s soccer sugar daddy. He also funded their soccer complex. Can’t recall the name. Find someone involved with the program long term and talk to them. Think UL softball on steroids.

Re: Men's NCAA Soccer Championship
Still level at 0, under 27 minutes left.
Marshall up 1-0 under 24 left. Clean up goal after keeper blocked a shot.
Under 10, Vermont levels game at 1. One touch right of goal ~ 10yards out to left bottom corner.
Marshall, better touches. Vermont stamina and speed. To overtime.
Unranked Vermont wins 2-1. Marshall’s last defender on a breakaway gets beat, ends up 1v1 with keeper. First NC of any type for the state of Vermont per ESPN crew.

No problem sir. MSOC will never be a big deal in the south. The season starts in August and can be in direct competition at times with football. Looking at the bracket, not too many big boys play soccer. Even if UL had a Hoops Family donor, it wouldn’t be for soccer.
Watched the last third of the game. Several international players, which probably doesn’t come cheap at that level.
Even though it’s a sport I occasionally watch, I’m not naive to the fact it never will happen at UL. It would require a Title IX addition of some type.
Congratulations to Marshall on a good run. Vermont just had more in the tank when it mattered.

Honest question. Does the Sunbelt require that schools carry certain sports? Could a school not have a MBB team?

When I worked there, certain sports were required (MBB and WBB for sure). Not sure if that’s still the case, but it would be virtually impossible to be a D1 school and not have it.
Men’s basketball NCAA tournament $$ from the CBS contract continues to be a huge component of conf revenue sharing, and to miss out on that would be disastrous.
Could make argument that having a successful MBB program is more important than FB honestly, especially in certain parts of the country.

Re: Men's NCAA Soccer Championship
Replace men's golf with men's soccer. Done.
Soccer is the future, especially in the south.

Soccer has as much of a future down here as hockey.

Roster size difference between soccer and golf is big (need a lot more scholarships for soccer than golf). Not to mention staffing differences, medical costs, travel, facilities, etc.
There’s a reason men’s soccer is sponsored by a small amt of schools.

Re: Men's NCAA Soccer Championship
40 years ago, Softball was like water skiing. It was a novelty. Look at it now. It is a top 4 or 5 sport at many universities across America. If we were trying to start a Softball program from scratch right now, we would never be able to build something like we have.
Soccer is going to grow just like Softball has. This can't be stopped. We either get in on the ground floor now like we did with Softball or we will be trying to play catch up a few decades from now with no chance to build anything good.

Soccer will definitely replace American football within the next 50 years. 100% I'll bet my life on that.
Might as well get out in front of it...for once.

Could you imagine the travel costs for Men’s soccer? To my knowledge there are only 4 DI teams within 7 hours of Lafayette: Houston Christian, UIW in San Antonio, SMU in Dallas, and Central Arkansas in Conway. For every other game (including conference,) you’re buying flights, meals, and hotel rooms for 28 players + coaches and support staff.

Even if it does, college soccer won’t replace it.
College soccer is mostly an afterthought. Schools don’t invest in it, people don’t attend it, nobody watches it on TV, and the nation’s top soccer athletes don’t play it. They’re already playing professionally.
