On Friday, former UL baseball standout Jonathan Lucroy leaves for spring training with the Milwaukee Brewers in Phoenix.
Lucroy got what he called a "tune-up" for spring training on Saturday at the Ragin' Cajuns' annual Fan Day at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field. He helped lead the Alumni team to a 4-1 win in an exhibition game against the current Cajun team.
"This place is real special to me," said Lucroy, Milwaukee's third-round pick in the 2007 amateur draft. "I came here for three years. I lived here for three years. I love it.
"I grew a lot as a player and a person, and a lot of these people out here I consider my family."

Lucroy left UL after the 2007 season as one of the program's most heralded hitters. He earned All-America honors last season from ABCA/Rawlings (second team) and Baseball America (third team). His 95 hits last year ranked as the second-most in a single season in team history as UL went 45-17, won the Sun Belt regular-season title and advanced to the NCAA College Station Regional.
In three seasons as a Cajun he set school records for career doubles (54), career RBIs (184) and career total bases in (414). The catcher finished second in team history in career hits (241), third in career home runs (35) and fifth in career batting average (.356).
After being drafted by the Brewers last summer, he was assigned to Helena of the Rookie-level Pioneer League. Lucroy showed an impressive eye at the plate, hitting .342 with 18 doubles and 39 RBIs in 61 games. Milwaukee then sent him to play Hawaii Winter Baseball, where he finished ninth in the league with a .299 batting average.
Baseball America recently ranked Lucroy as Milwaukee's 16th-best prospect, while MLB.com listed him as the 15th-best player from the Hawaii Winter Baseball season.
After spring training, Lucroy expects to start the season with Milwaukee's low Single-A team, the West Virginia Power of the South Atlantic League.
"Spring training is pretty much a tryout," said Lucroy, a year short of earning his UL degree. "I know for sure I'll be in West Virginia and maybe even move up from there. We'll just have to see what happens."
Lucroy expects big things from UL's baseball team, which opens the season at 10 a.m. Friday against Army in the UTSA Baseball Classic in San Antonio, Texas. The Cajuns have been picked to win the Sun Belt and are ranked in five preseason polls - including No. 19 by Baseball America.
"They've got good defense and good pitching," Lucroy said. "And you're only going to go as far as your pitching takes you. That's just what baseball is, and that's the way it will always be."
