I don't forsee Memphis, Tulane or USF in the Big 12 or the ACC. This is why they are considering the PAC membership today. They have been chasing the Big 12 dream for some time now.

There will be another split at the top 40 to 50 programs and they will have the highest TV Revenue package and their own playoff system. The rest will remain exactly where they are at today, or a in a conference with members like Oregon State and Washington State that will not make the Top 40 or 50. Moving conferences at that point will only become a schedule alliance because it doesn't achieve the goal of joining those programs that have split from the old P4 conferences for Football.

They win in branding temporarily and financially. In the long run they will move to a more geographically Western conference but remain slightly above the Mountain West. They will never be in the new power conference.

Once the ACC brass moves to the SEC/B10…you can bet your bottom dollar Tulane and Memphis will hook up with WF, Syracuse, BC, NC State, Virginia, Louisville, GT and etc. in a watered down ACC. That is what they are holding out for, otherwise they would have joined the PAC already. The PAC needs a travel partner for TXST, why not us? No exit fees and clearly one of the top athletic programs in the SBC/G6.

This is what I see happening too. So, what is the best place for UL, if we are not in that top 40-50. Yes, geography plays a part, but also there will be tiers in the next group of schools based upon TV contracts. If we want to be a big player in that next level of schools, we need to maximize TV revenue, which may be the PAC or some re-jiggered SBC/ACC look. Some of this is going to be luck, but the more prepared you are, the luckier you get.

As a market, the PAC 12 is looking at Texas State because they are right in the middle of Austin and San Antonio and are claiming those markets.

UL is right in the middle of Baton Rouge and Lake Charles. If we similarly claim those markets combined with Lafayette, we have a bigger market than Tulane does. We need to sell this. And we need to sell our athletic facilities and R1 academic status.

Yeah, the WAC annual payout was out of whack with reality, it didn't justify their presence.

We need an athletic department with a pulse. We can't even plan ahead for water at a hot football game.. Will never happen.

OK you're saying there will be a Top Tier 50 schools max. Then there will be a Middle Tier consisting of P4 has beens with a serving of high level G6ers, maybe three dozen or so schools, leaving another three dozen FBS schools looking up from the bottom of the barrel for eternity. We know with certainty UL and every other G6er is shut out of the future Power 50. Making the middle tier requires being proactive, now. A wait and see strategy results in a chronic crick in your neck from looking up all the time. If we look back over the past 15 years, UL deserves credit for being very proactive with multiple facility upgrades. The latest and largest one the new football stadium. We've come a long way. Time is right for next step up.

What conference would UL have a better chance of making that Middle Tier?

PAC 12 - Washington State, Oregon State, Boise State, San Diego State, Utah State, Fresno State, Colorado State, Texas State, Louisiana

SBC - Troy, USA, ULM, Ark State, Louisiana, USM, Coastal, GA Southern, GA State, App State & Marshall

App State and Marshall would make it for sure and maybe ULM and Ark State. UL - maybe as part of that conference.

All of the PAC 12 would make it and if UL is in the PAC 12, they would be in.

Not really...depends on your definition of what a market is...

Should UL talk to Texas State and approach the PAC 12 as a travel partner for them. Travel to the West shouldn't be any more costly than travel to the East. Would this greatly change the perception of UL to the public? We have the academics and the facilities. If the PAC 12 was willing to go as far as New Orleans, Lafayette shoudn't be a problem. Can we sell ourselves to the PAC 12? Do we want to make such a move or maintain status quo? The future may not bring any other options.

I don't believe your numbers on where the $13 mil would go, but even if true, a less absurd statement states that the current $2 mil doesn't even get Louisiana on the SBC bus.

And they own it.

Last time we talked about this, I believe 9 mill/yr was floated as being the target for a move to the PAC to make baseline financial sense.

No worse than travel to the Eastern Division teams in the SBC. And, what is our SBC revenue, $2-3M? Think also about increased attendance for a more attractive schedule that gets fans excited. More season ticket sales, higher game attendance, more game day revenue, better bowl games and a changed perception of UL. Have to look at the greater value and future benefits of a PAC 12 affiliation. Haven't even mentioned basketball. Ask the coaches what they would prefer. I'll bet they would prefer a PAC 12 affiliation.
