Re: Cedric Russell entering transfer portal
1 coach said a player has to decide he is going to listen to. Himself, other people (agents and hangers on) or the truth (typically the coaching staff where he is).

I think he probably has a good chance of making some money overseas.
He would prefer not to play overseas due to his family situation. Without the Covid issue, he would not have another year. Unique situation in that he is a fifth year senior. I wonder if he would play in Canada where that minor pro league operating without the border shutdown. Frank Bartley started there and is now making a good living playing in Europe. Bryce Washington has also played there. Regardless of where he ends up, I wish Cedric well.
Here is another point. We can't replace him due to his scholarship here being based on being a fifth year player. We are at 14 now due to Dou Gueye (another fifth year player) and the normal limit is 13. Still there are 16 on the roster with 2 walkons. Lots of guys will fight it out for limited minutes and redshirting is surely an option for some.

I think you mean ‘family adviser’. If he had an agent, he would be ineligible, correct?

I thought the same thing. Did a google search. Apparently the rules were changed a few years ago to allow for agents.

Re: Cedric Russell entering transfer portal
Well this hurts next years team. I had heard he was getting differing information fed in both ears, so the announcement of him returning to UL was kind of surprising.
Wish him the best as he supposedly has high aspirations to make “the league.” Individually, a SBC conference player of year could have topped off his resume. Guess he thinks he can perform at a high level at a “bigger” school and still get credit for his individual play.

As long he is not signed with any agency, he can seek advice from them. So yes, I should say advisor.

He's not good enough to play in the league.

Re: Cedric Russell entering transfer portal
Anyone else weary of the transfer portal already. With the new immediate eligibility runs it seems like pro sports without contracts. Just looking at softball, baseball and basketball, it just looks like a revolving door already.

I am. But I also feel for student athletes (seemingly more like semi-pro athletes now-a-days) in that they should have the freedom to decide where they want to attend school, whenever. Especially in the event that a coach that they committed to (kids buy into coaches first, schools second) accepts a job offer elsewhere.
Not sure if they can make any sort of amendments to the rules now that the cat is out of the bag, such as a restricted transfer portal. Where student athletes are allowed to enroll immediately if a HC leaves the program, otherwise they have to stay for a minimum of two years? I dunno, wish we could strike a better balance between student athlete freedom and athletic programs getting a little more stability in their rosters.

^^^This. An absolute killer for the non P5 programs. Regardless of the sport, a coach can build a strong program and now with players able to be paid openly, poaching will be the norm. This will make some teams a contender to a pretender overnight.
We’ve seen the flip…the student-athlete is now the athlete-student.

I’m not ready to say this rule is a G5 killer. Small sample size, but so far this rule has been a net benefit to our program. We’ve gotten more talent from G5 schools than we’ve lost to the portal.
And when you consider there will always be a greater number of talented players recruited to P5 schools, I can see this trend continuing. For every G5 standout that wants to move up, there is bound to be even more P5 talent tired of sitting the bench.
I just have to wonder why a G5 school would even bother recruiting and signing a highly talented high school kid though when they are highly likely to bounce after a year or two. Seems like it would be better to focus on poaching disgruntled P5 kids since you only get one free transfer. Our new transfers are essentially locked in with us. Our high school recruits aren’t.

You nailed it on "athlete-student" flip effect.
As long as roster limits stay the same though, this won't affect the overall P5/G5 talent levels.
It will however stifle fan/team interest.

Definitely bad advice. What guarantees he even plays at a bigger school? That's rediculous

Can you enter the portal teamless?
He did not have to announce he was returning in order to enter the portal.

Then presumably he’d stay here. You aren’t required to leave your school to enter the portal.

But once you make the decision to enter, UL has to move on. I'm sure thats what Marlin told him. We can't be left out dry when a guy enters the portal.

According to mike we can’t use his scholarship for another person anyway. So by moving on do you mean just cutting all ties?

My understanding is they are actively recruiting right now so not sure how the scholarship opportunities work out in this scenario.

We are full up at 13 (14 if you count Dou). Maybe they are expecting more to leave.

As a returning Senior using his extra year Russell did not count against the scholarship limit so him leaving does not free anything up, all 13 scholarships are filled. I'm sure they are always recruiting as someone else could move on on their own or someone could be asked to move on. As Mike stated there is still 16 on the roster with Gueye and the 2 walkons, who are no slouches in their own right. If I remember correctly Garnett had a scholarship offer from Southern that he turned down and I think everyone would agree that Domingue is talented enough to contribute and could easily be on scholarship at some lower tier D1 schools. I wouldn't be surprised to see someone else move on just because they are buried on the depth chart.

Yeah, its never going to be the same again. Will take some getting used to. We could see this revolving door coming from a mile away. Its obviously too late, but a no transfer rule within same conference would have been nice. But maybe it wasn't defendable either.

He may not be good enough to play in the NBA but he may be good enough for G league. He was not invited to G league camp this year. He may think playing well at an SEC school well get him the G league invite next year. In his own mind that may open the door for an eventual NBA opportunity. Note I have no idea if he will play in the SEC. Just an example with that term. Also, mindset of many college players is they will eventually be in NBA. More need to listen to Charles Barkley.

Today is the last day to enter portal. I was told they don’t expect anyone else to move on. Now someone could move on to a D2 school or a JUCO after today. Remember last year does not count in regard to any eligibility issue. It is possible recruiting going on is for future seasons at this stage.

I think it is still a possibility Cedric decides to come back. That would be in event he does not get the type offer he is looking for. Once again we can’t use his scholarship on anyone else so keeping door open is wise for both parties.
