. . . you don’t know that . . .

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure his comments were in the context of the fact that Napier had another offer and decided to leave. Hence his comments about how the budget money was no longer applicable to Des because it exclusively applied to Napier who was now gone.
I think it’s safe to say Napier had personal ambitions to be HFC at a major (read SEC) program. We were never going to keep him long term. And while we may have been able to hang onto him a little longer it was going to take boosters to foot the bill. Let’s face it, our football “operations” do not generate sufficient income to afford what we pay the staff now without significant financial support from boosters. And the program has some big bills to pay with the upcoming facility improvements. I believe if CMD starts achieving CBN’s final 2 seasons success money will follow to pay him and his staff appropriately.
So as an administration, that's it? You don't say to said donors, listen, riding on this wave of success, we are in a better position to go out with a national search and attract another coach with equal or better credentials than Napier had coming into this job. Of course they aren't paying 2mil for Des. This isn't rocket science. But as usual, I guess that would take too much effort. Zero proactive moves. Everything is reactive and "we can't do that here". And with a sizeable enough fanbase that defends that kind of mediocrity, it's no wonder nothing changes.
