McNeese thwarts Moody's effort

University of Louisiana southpaw Hunter Moody had the best start of his young career Wednesday against McNeese State.
Unfortunately, the Ragin Cajuns' offense didn't have one of its better nights.
UL (14-2) stranded 11 base runners as the visiting Cowboys (7-10) stunned the Cajuns 4-3 at Moore Field, ending the Cajuns' 10-game home winning streak. Moody struck out a career high 10 and scattered six hits in seven innings, but got the no decision. Micah Cockrell (0-1) entered in the eighth and McNeese quickly touched him up for two runs.
"Hunter did a great job for a freshman," UL coach Tony Robichaux said. "He caught a night where we just didn't protect him. He did what our pitching philosophy is here - don't worry about yourself, don't worry about trying to get a win. You keep your team in the ballgame and try to get the team a win. Hunter did that. We just didn't get the job done and they did."
Cockrell hit Tyler Dugas with one out in the eighth to start the Cowboys rally. Taylor Faul followed with an RBI double and Dustin Schroer's RBI single gave McNeese the 4-2 lead.
UL got a run back in the home half of the eighth on Adam Massiatte RBI groundout to second, but McNeese St. coach Chad Clement brought in No. 1 starter Jacob Marceaux in the bottom of the ninth to shut the door.Robichaux said Marceaux was scheduled to start, but was scratched before the game.
"I'm sure if the game would've been out of hand they surely don't pitch him," Robichaux said. "But again that's another failure of ours right there.

Anytime somebody has a good arm in the bullpen the last thing you want to do is put yourself behind the eight ball and have to face him. If we're up 5-1, I doubt Clem uses him. But, they did a good job. They put themselves in a position to win and in a position to come in with their best arm. You've got to give them credit, they came in here tonight and won."
The Cowboys came out swinging early, tagging Moody for two runs on three hits in the first inning.
Bryan Cartie led off the inning with double to right center on Moody's first offering of the game. Beau Knowles followed with a single to right on the next pitch to put runners on the corner.
Moody fanned the next two batters looking, but Tyler Dugas laced a double down the right field line with two outs to chase home Cartie and Knowles.
UL got one back in the home half of the first behind a leadoff double from John Coker and Josh Landry's RBI single.
The score remained that way until lefty Jefferies Tatford led off the fourth inning with an opposite field home run, his second roundtripper of the season.
UL had chances to go ahead after Tatford's homer, but couldn't come up with a big hit. Danny Davis (2-1) got the win in 3 1/3 innings of relief, despite walking four.
"We had opportunities to try and break the game open early," Robichaux said. "We just didn't do it. They didn't let us do it. When you fail to break the game open when you have chances to break the game open, especially at home it doesn't take much to beat you if you leave runners on base. We left some runners on and they got a ball down the line and then a flare and that was enough.''
Even if we would've comeback, I don't think we deserved to win."
