Corey Fredrick said he can fill that bill.
“They said they needed a juco receiver to step in and be a leader,” Frederick said. “I figured I’d fit in perfect.”
Fredrick became the Cajuns’ eighth commitment of this year’s recruiting class this week, giving head coach Rickey Bustle a verbal nod after visiting the campus along with seven other recruits last weekend.
“I liked everything about it,” said the six-foot, 190-pound native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. “I liked the program, I liked the coaching staff and I got a chance to talk to a few of the players. I think I’ll fit in well.”
Fredrick played the last two years at Compton (Calif.) Community College, and finished with 56 catches for 641 yards and seven touchdowns as a sophomore in earning second-team All-Western States Conference.
He set a Compton CC school record in this year’s second game for most receptions in a single game when he grabbed 13 passes against Cerritos College.

“I’m a pretty good route runner,” Fredrick said, “and I’ve got good hands and decent speed. But I think my strong point is that I know the game and I’ve got confidence in myself.”
Fredrick had only 15 catches in his freshman season at Compton for coach Cornell Ward, but had over 300 yards on those grabs and two scores to earn honorable mention all-conference.
Prior to Compton, he attended Dillard High in Fort Lauderdale, the same high school as recent Cajun commitment Derrick Smith. He had 36 catches for over 700 yards and seven scores as a senior for coach Ken Scott.
He was also a prep basketball standout, playing point guard for a Dillard team that won back-to-back Class 6A Florida state championships in his junior and senior seasons.
Fredrick was recruited by both San Diego State and Nevada on the west coast and by Central Florida in his native state. He has completed academic requirements at Compton and will enroll at UL for the spring semester.
“That’ll give me a spring practice to prepare,” he said. “The coaches talked about running a lot of four-wides, so I’m really looking forward to it.”
