BATON ROUGE — The West All-Stars have endured their share of struggles in the LHSCA softball doublehader.
In the past 13 years, they have defeated the East All-Stars only twice, but thanks to Port Barre’s Codi Runyan, the West All-Stars swept the East All-Stars 2-1 and 6-4 during Saturday’s event which was held in Baton Rouge at LSU’s Softball Complex.
Runyan, who has signed with the University of Louisiana, went a combined two-for-four in the game with a double and a RBI en route to garnering the game’s Most Valuable Player for the West squad.
“It was so much fun,” Runyan said. “There was a lot of talent on the field and everyone has been so nice.”
Teurlings Catholic shortstop and McNeese State signee Brooke Brodhead also had a good showing, going 1-for-3 on the day with an RBI double.
In game one, with the West trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Runyan tied the game with a two-out RBI double down the left field line plating Savanna Sims from third base.

Duhon then put the West ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning when she hit a slow dribbler in-between third base and shortstop and then scored on a throwing error.
“That was the longest 60 feet of my life,” said Duhon, who left after the first game. “After beating the throw to first I made a slow turn to second and no one was covering so I took off and then I realize that no one was covering third so I kept running. Then they threw the ball in the dugout and I went home. Running home I was thinking ‘oxygen please’.”
Cecilia’s Heidi Robin, who also has signed with LSU, started the game allowing one earned run on two hits, two walks and striking out one in three innings. Robin also went 1-for-1 at the plate.
But Savannah Benge of Northwood picked up the victory after tossing three shutout innings.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the West jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first three innings behind a couple of errors by the East.
The first of the four runs for the West came in the second inning when Lacee Chruma of Vandebilt Catholic scored on an error.
With one out in the third inning, Comeaux shortstop Karli Hubbard (UL Lafayette) and Deserea Griffin of Benton pulled off a double steal advancing to second and third with Hubbard scoring on a throwing error by the catcher for a 2-0 lead. Southwood’s Heather Hebert then drove in Griffin with a RBI single for a 3-0 advantage.
With two outs, Sims, who pinch ran for Hebert, stole second base then advanced to third on another error by the catcher scored on a RBI single to right field by Chruma for the 4-0 advantage.
The East cut the deficit to 4-3 with three runs in the bottom of the third inning, but the West extended their lead to 6-3 with two more runs in the top of the fourth inning, highlighted by an RBI double down the left field line by Brodhead, scoring Tayl’r Hollis.
Robin threw two scoreless innings in the second game, allowing one hit, while striking out two.
Comeaux’s Anne-Marie Cart was the only other Acadiana area player to record a hit in the two games, with STM’s Hollis going 0-for-2 with a run scored.
