Re: ULM makes a statement
I was at all of the games this weekend and our pitching is really in bad shape. ULM is a very good hitting team, but good pitching beats good hitting, and we don't have good pitching.
Why is Robe not playing Dillon Guillory behind the plate? He is the only catcher who can hit.

Good pitching will only beat good hitting in a one game set. A three game series will almost always end up going to the team that hit the ball better. ULM hit the ball extreemly well, and well we just cant hit period.

Bull! Tony Robicheaux has said hundreds of times "Good pitching beats good hitting"!
When we had Dohman, Gros, Gabriel, etc. did good hitting beat us? Hell no, we made it to 3rd in the CWS. And don't say we had good hitting. We had average hitting at best.

Go back to the 1991 world series (i think that was the year) when Cincinnati blanked the vaunted Oakland A's and the bash brothers 4-0. Cincy had average hitting but there pitching staff was lights out. Good pitching beats good hitting every time.

If our pitching was so great then why did we not win it all. We won two games and lost two. Justin pitched a great game but other than that what did we do?
Robe can say what he wants until is blue in the face, but reality is with the new format of the Regionals, Supers and a 3 game series in the finals of the CWS pitching may get you to the Supers but it wont win it for you. Not with aluminum bats. Robe's style is not condusive for the new style of college baseball. I think he is a great coach and if NCAA went to wooden bats his style would be perfect but its not going to happen.
I believe that he is the guy we need to run the program but he needs to adjust his coaching style in order to get us to the next level.

Dude lay off whater you are smoking!
First off, Justin did not win the game he pitched. he loss the opening game to Stanford. Second Scott Dohman pitched a great game to beat San Jose State in Game 2. And thirdly, it was pitching not hitting that got us to the World Series. What fantasy world do you live in?
Here's a few stats from the 2000 CWS team.
Team Batting Avg. .294 definitly not great
Team ERA 3.31 exceptional, I believe we finished in the top 5 in team ERA that year
Dohman 13-5 3.23 ERA
Gabriel 9-4 3.04 ERA
Worst individual ERA for the year was 4.39 by Eric Templet and he was still 7-3
Batting average against Cajun pitchers in 2000 was .238
Proof that pitching beats hitting.

I second that. If good hitting would beat good pitching, the yankees would have the last 7 rings. Pitching and defense wins.

And as you and I have stated before, just in different ways, timely hitting.
It really is hard to figure how essentially the same pitching staff from last year has struggled so much this year. I can understand one or two guys having a down year after a stellar year, but everybody? The one thing I have noticed this year is that the umpiring behind the plate has been truly pathetic. Not to make excuses for our guys because both teams have to deal with the same ump, but the umps this year are just horrible.

A big part, I think, is that our pitchers are trying to be too perfect. Farquar pitched 2 or 3 gems in the beginning of the season and lost games where he went 8 innings and gave up 1 or 2 runs. Our lack of run support and defense has forced pitchers to go for the strikeout when they aren't strikeout pitchers.
