UL – Despite a late-inning rally by Louisiana, ULM scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning and six more in the ninth as the Warhawks took a 14-4 win over the Ragin’ Cajuns in the series rubber game Sunday at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
Louisiana (17-17, 8-10 Sun Belt) has now lost all three Sun Belt Conference series this season at home, posting a 2-7 mark. ULM (22-12, 14-4 Sun Belt) retained its standing in first place with its second straight victory over the Cajuns.
ULM tagged freshman Michael Cook (Lafayette, La.) for the loss as the right-hander last six innings. Cook (4-3) allowed four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts while throwing 115 pitches.
Josh Lett (6-1) was the winning pitcher for the Warhawks, scattering seven hits for two runs in 5 2/3 innings. Ben Soignier notched his third save of the season, holding the Cajuns to two runs during the final 3 1/3 innings.
Soignier went 4-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored. Kyle Suire drove in a game-high six runs on 4-for-6 hitting with two home runs. Nick Maragas went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run.
Three Cajuns recorded two hits - Josh Logan (Magee, Miss.), Scott Hawkins (Collierville, Tenn.) and Chance Harst (Lafayette, La.). Hawkins and Harst added solo home runs in the eighth inning.
The Cajuns opened the scoring in the first inning, 1-0. After a lead-off triple from Logan, Matt Goulas (New Iberia, La.) drove him in with a RBI sacrifice fly to left. ULM then tied the game in the second on Matt Collins’ RBI single up the middle.
ULM took its first lead in the third, 3-1. With two out, Suire drilled a two-run homer to deep centerfield for the Warhawks’ lead that they would not relinquish. The Warhawks added another run in the sixth, 4-1, on a RBI single up the middle by A.J. Siggers.
The Cajuns answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the deficit to 4-2. William Long (Valrico, Fla.) drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk to plate Goulas. However, the Cajuns were unable to get any closer as Blaine LaFleur (Opelousas, La.) struck out to end the inning.
A four-run eighth inning by the Warhawks gave ULM a commanding 8-2 lead. A sacrifice fly, RBI single and two-RBI double provided the Warhawks with the huge advantage heading into the home half of the eighth.
Back-to-back home runs from Hawkins and Harst gave Louisiana second life as the Cajuns pulled to within four runs, 8-4. But, a two-run home run by Maragas in the ninth closed the door on the Cajuns, giving the Warhawks a 10-4 lead. ULM later added four more runs in the inning for the final 14-4 tally.
Louisiana returns to action Tuesday for the front end of a home-and-home series with the Northwestern State Demons at Brown-Stroud Field in Natchitoches at 6:30 p.m.
