LOUISIANA La. - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajun cross country team in conjuction with TMC Foods will host the 14th annual Popeye’s Ragin’ Cajun Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, September 18th at Acadiana Park.

The women’s 5k race is scheduled to start a 9:30 a.m. while the men’s 8k race will follow at 10 a.m.

Teams scheduled to compete with the host Cajuns are Grambling State, Northwestern State, Nicholls State, Tulane, Xavier, Louisiana State, and McNeese State.

LOUISIANA La. - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns men’s and women’s cross country teams got their seasons underway today at Acadiana Park in Lafayette, LA.

University of Louisiana Ragin' Cajun cross country team got things kicked off on the right foot, as they were able to outrun the rest of the field finishing first. The LAdy Cajuns on the other hand didn’t fair quite as well but they still were able to manage a third place finish.

Jake Simmons, Walter Whitfield, and Chad Campbell took three out of the top four spots on the men’s side while Laura and Anne Zaunbrecher finished eight and tenth respectively for the women.

Freshman Simmons captures Popeye’s crown

LOUISIANA La. — University of Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun cross country squad hadn’t won a meet championship since the 2001 season, but the Ragin’ Cajuns more than made up for that Saturday.

The Cajun men took three of the top four individual spots and put all of their five counting runners among the top seven collegiate finishers in taking an easy team win at their own Popeye’s Ragin’ Cajun Invitational at Acadiana Park.

Jake Simmons’ individual win paced the squad to a runaway victory with only 21 points. McNeese State was well back in second place with 53, followed by Grambling State with 65, Northwestern State with 99 and Nicholls State with 120.

Northwestern claimed the women’s title with 47 points, with the host Cajun women’s team finishing third with 61. Grambling was second with 57 while McNeese finished with 72 and Nicholls State with 97.

Cajun Men Finish Second Overall, Whitfield Third at LSU Invitational

BATON ROUGE – Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns men’s cross country team used a third place performance from senior Walter Whitfield en route to a second place finish here Saturday at the LSU Cross Country Invitational. The women’s cross country finished fourth overall.

Whitfield finished with a time of 26:00.09 for his second third place finish in as many weeks.

Freshman and Houma, La., native Jake Simmons made the second-best finish for the Cajuns on Saturday, finishing sixth with a time of 26:18.98. Last week in the Popeye’s Ragin’ Cajuns Invitational, the Vandebilt Catholic High alum finished first in his Ragin’ Cajuns cross country debut.

Justin Lemaire and Chad Campbell finished 15th and 16th, respectively, to give the Cajuns four top-20 runners.

Ryan Dupree finished 22nd overall, D.J. Hebert finished 29th and Ben Schexnayder finished 39th overall.

For the women, the Zaunbrecher twins were the only Ragin’ Cajuns to finish in the top 20. Analise Zaunbrecher finished 13th overall with a time of 23:39.93, while Laura Zaunbrecher finished 20th overall with a time of 24:12.79.

Jasmine Collins finished in 35th place with a time of 25:16.53, while Suzanne Boudreaux finished 38th and Leah Legere 39th to round out the Cajuns’ top 40 performers.

Six other Ragin’ Cajun runners finished in the top 70, including Jennifer Gautreaux (42nd), Casey Brown (47th), Stacy Enright (50th), Dusty Martin (51st), Laura Credeur (63rd) and Jessica Vadell (69th).

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns men’s and women’s cross country teams return to action next Saturday, Oct. 4, to participate in the Lamar Invitational in Beaumont, Texas.

NACHITOCHES, LA- The University of Louisiana Ragin’ Cajun and Lady Cajun cross country teams come away with first place finishes at the Northwestern State University Cross Country Invitational.

Walter Whitfield, Jake Simmons, and Chad Campbell all finished in the top ten for the men while Analise Zaunbrecher, Laura Zaunbrecher, and Jennifer Gautreaux all had top ten finishes for the women.

This marks the first time this season both the men and women both finished first in the same meet and the second championship of the season for the men. This is also the third straight meet this season that Walter Whitfield and Jake Simmons have finished in the top ten for the men.

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns will next be in action on October 16th at the Chili Pepper Run in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Cajuns Cross Country Teams Run Well At Northwestern State

NATCHITOCHES, LA - The University of Louisiana men and women’s cross-country teams have a good showing at the Northwestern St. Quad in Natchitoches.

The men’s team finished tied for first with Northwestern State while the women finished second. The Northwestern State Demons finished first in both the men and women’s races.

Ben Schexnayder of Louisiana took first place overall with a time of 21:46.4. While Analise Zaunbrecher had the highest finish for the women coming in third with a time of 16:09.3. Laura Zaunbrecher was not far behind with a time of 16:11.9.

The Ragin’ Cajuns will return to action on October 30th in Little Rock, Arkansas for the Sun Belt Conference meet and then they will finish their season on November 15th in Waco, Texas for the NCAA Regional meet.

LAFAYETTE — The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns will host the Lourdes SportsCare/Ragin’ Cajun Cross Country Invitational Saturday here at Acadiana Park.

Over 30 high schools from throughout the state are scheduled in compete in Saturday’s event. Six races are scheduled for the day with the junior varsity girls’ race beginning at 9 a.m. The junior varsity boys’ race will begin at 9:30 a.m.

The high school races begin at 10 a.m. with the varsity girls’ small school division followed by the varsity girls’ larger school division at 10:30 a.m. The varsity boys’ small school race is slated to begin at 11 a.m. followed by the varsity boys’ large school race at 11:30 a.m.

LAFAYETTE — The countdown is in the final stages for the 2004 Cingular Wireless Cajun Cup, the annual chief fund-raiser for the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns’ men’s and women’s track and field program.

The 10K road race, which begins at Cajun Field, winds through downtown Lafayette and finishes on Cajundome Boulevard, will be at 8:05 a.m. on Saturday.

First place overall male and female winners each receive $250 out of total prize money totalling $1,330. Masters Division awards are also $250 for the male and female winner.

Each division features awards five deep in each male and female open division, while age group awards are also included.

Any course record broken earns an additional $100.

University of Louisiana head coach Timmy Lemaire named 2004 Sun Belt Conference Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Behind freshman Jake Simmons and senior Walter Whitfield, Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns cross country team claimed their first conference championship in 30 years with a first place finish at the Sun Belt Conference Cross Country Championships Saturday.

Louisiana claimed the team championship, finishing with 58 points. South Alabama’s Tonny Okello won the individual overall championship with a time of 25:05.4.

Louisiana’s Sun Belt cross country championship is the first conference title since 1974, when the Cajuns claimed the Southland Conference championship.

Three Ragin’ Cajuns finished in the top 10, while six runners finished in the top 30 overall.

Simmons, a Houma, La. native, finished sixth overall, leading all Cajun runners with a time of 26:17.8. Whitfield, a Chauvin, La. native, finished seventh overall with a time of 26:19.1 Justin Lemaire rounded out the top 10 runners for UL Lafayette, finishing eighth overall with a time of 26:28.0

“Having a freshman finishing that high is really important,” Louisiana head coach Tim Lemaire said. “It builds confidence.”

Lemaire was named the 2004 Sun Belt Conference men’s cross country Coach of the Year.

“It’s a great feeling,” Lemaire said. “We did it with all local kids which makes it even more special.

“There were true Ragin’ Cajuns running out there for us. They worked hard all summer and came through to win it.”

Chad Campbell finished 17th overall with a time of 27:09.6, followed by Ryan Dupree in 20th place and D.J. Hebert in 27th place. Ben Schexnayder finished 49th overall for the Cajuns.

“Justin ran with a lot of intensity, while the other guys had a good consistent race,” Lemaire continued. “The guys ran together as a team.

“Walter and Jake have done an awesome job working together,” Lemaire continued. “We are losing Walter, Chad and Ryan, but we can reload easily behind Jake (Simmons), Justin (Lemaire) and D.J. (Hebert).”

On the women’s side, Western Kentucky won the team championship with 33 points. WKU’s Cara Nichols won the individual overall championship with a time of 18:34.8.

Freshman Jasmine Collins led the way for Louisiana, finishing 29th overall with a time of 20:38.5. Analise Zaunbrecher followed closely behind, finishing 33rd overall. Rayne, La. native and Notre Dame High product Casey Brown finished 38th overall with a time of 21:09.5. Jennifer Gautreaux finished 47th, while Laura Zaunbrecher finished 48th and Susan Boudreaux 49th. Leah Legere finished 50th overall and Stacey Enright finished 51st overall.

“We have been up and down all year on the Lady Cajun side,” Lemaire commented. “Arkansas State had a really good meet and ended up finishing one spot ahead of us.

“Although we finished eighth, we probably had the best team we’ve ever had here at UL. It’s unfortunate that we finished (eighth), but we have built a good foundation for next year.”

LOUISIANA La. - Lousiana freshman Jacob Simmons was named to the Louisiana Sports Writer’s Association Cross Country team after a stellar season with the Ragin' Cajuns.

He also garnered Sunbelt Freshman of the year honors.

Simmons, a native of Houma, LA, had two top 5 finishes and four top 10 finishesat ULL.

He won his first ever collegiate meet by winning the Ragin' Cajun Invitational with a time of 26:30.

He placed 6th at the Sun Belt Conference Championship Meet and was selected to the all-conference team.

Tim Lemaire is coach of the year honors after leading the Ragin' Cajuns to the programs first ever Sun Belt Conference Championship and its first conference championship since 1974 when it was a member of the Southland Conference.

Three Ragin’ Cajuns finished in the top 10, while six runners finished in the top 30 overall.

BATON ROUGE - The Ragin’ Cajuns and Lady Cajuns indoor track teams from the University of Louisiana will begin their 2005 season Saturday at the LSU Purple Tiger Invite in the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse.

Louisiana’s Ragin' Cajun track team looks to improve upon its second place conference finish from a year ago.

Senior Walter Whitfield, junior Justin Lemaire and freshman Jake Simmons will lead the Ragin' Cajun indoor squad this season. In the fall, the trio was named to the All-Sun Belt Cross Country team.

Whitfield and Simmons, a native of Houma, La. and a product of Vandebilt Catholic, will participate in the men’s 5000 meter run. Lemaire will participate in the men’s 3000 meter run.

“This will be the first indoor meet of the season,” Louisiana head coach Lance Veazey said. “Many athletes are still trying to settle in and shake some of the rust off.”

Veazey, the 2004 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track Coach of the Year, expects newcomers like Simmons to perform well.

“We will be traveling with a limited squad, however, I do expect to see some good performances out of our newcomers.”

The Lady Cajun indoor squad is led by freshmen Jasmine Collins and Rayne native Casey Brown. Collins and Jamie Blue will compete in the 4x400 relay, while Brown will run in the women’s 3000 meter race. Collins will also participate in the mile run and Blue will participate in the women’s 400 meter run.

Andree Bonvillain will participate in the pole vault. Leah Legere and Laura Credeur will run in the women’s 800 meters.

Morning session field events will start the meet beginning at 9:30 a.m. followed by morning session track events at 11 a.m. The weight throw will be the first field event with the men’s and women’s mile runs being the first track events.

The evening session will begin at 1 p.m. with the pole vault being the first event followed by the shot put. Track events will begin at 4 p.m. with the men’s and women’s 60 meter hurdles and 60 meter sprint preliminaries.

BATON ROUGE - Seniors Walter Whitfield and Laura Credeur won the men's 5000-meter run and the women's 800-meter run respectively for Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun track team here Saturday in the LSU Purple Tiger Invite at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse.

Freshman Jake Simmons finished second behind Whitfield in the 5000-meter, with Whitfield turning in a winning 14:58.01 effort. Credeur had a winning time of 2:26.50 in her victory.

"I'm pleased with our performance considering it was the first meet of the season," UL coach Lance Veazey said. "However, I'm not satisfied. We still have plenty of work to do over the next couple of weeks."

Scott Lowry finished fifth in the men's pole vault, while Kyle Ward finished fourth in the men's 60-meter hurdles.

The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Louis Roquemore, Jon-Erik Shanklin, Jarman St. Julien and Jarvis Murchison finished fourth overall.

Shanklin and Kade Slaughter finished fourth and seventh, respectively, in the men's 200-meter dash. Shanklin finished with a time of 22.40, while Slaughter finished at 22.74.

BATON ROUGE - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns & Lady Cajuns indoor track and field teams will compete in their second meet of the indoor season this weekend in the LSU Bayou Bengal Invitational at the Carl Maddox Field House.

Louisiana had some men and women perform well in the LSU Purple Tiger meet held two weeks ago with Walter Whitfield winning the men’s 5000 meter run and Laura Credeur winning the women’s 800 meter run.

Head Coach Lance Veazey said “The athletes have been working really hard over the last couple of weeks and we are still working out some of the wrinkles so the first of couple of meets is training for us.”

Athletes to keep an eye on for the men will be Walter Whitfield, Jake Simmons, Jarvis Murchison, Scott Lowry, and Derick Richardson.

For the women it will be Andree Bonvillian, Jasmine Collins, Laura Credeur, and Desi Chatman.

The LSU Bayou Bengal Invitational will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday in Baton Rouge and wrap up Saturday evening.

Is Jarvis Murchinson still a member of the football team. He was a member of Bustle's first recruiting class. He was offered by a few Big 12 schools out of high school and played some as a freshman. He has tremendous speed and could be used as a kick returner, conerback, or receiver.
