Louisiana-Lafayette coach Jerry Baldwin believes his team can compete for the inaugural Sun Belt championship.

"We haven't lost any confidence,'' Baldwin said. "We feel we're on the right track. We were disappointed in the outcome of the 2000 season, and our goal is to win the Sun Belt championship.''

Quite a bit of confidence for a coach whose team went 1-10 last season. And whose Indians have won a total of six games the last four years.

    LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE
    -------------------------------------
    2000 Record: 1-10 (5-3 ATS)
    Returning starters: Off: 5; Def: 10; K: 1.

There will be plenty of empty seats at Cajun Field this season. Last year, ULL lost home games to Sam Houston State, Northwestern State, and Jacksonville State. That’s no way to build or maintain a fan base.

HC Jerry Baldwin (3-19 in his two seasons in Lafayette) had a convenient alibi. His team was very young. 20 freshmen (11 pure freshmen and 9 redshirt freshmen) saw action last year, and that doesn’t even count a gaggle of 1st-year players who sat out the 1999 season as so-called “partial qualifiers.”

6’4” pure freshman QB Jon Van Cleave, the gem of Baldwin’s second recruiting class, played in 7 games and exhibited good tools. Van Cleave could have a nice career if he gets a good supporting cast. Currently, the cast is weak, excepting LT Jonathan Rusch, who has started 22 straight games.

The good news for the defense is that 10 starters return. The bad news is (never mind, that joke’s so old that it isn’t funny anymore).

ODDS AND ENDS: ULL is the school closest to the Sun Belt bowl site. Baldwin thinks that will help recruiting, but he’s grasping at straws . . .Starting MLB Marrious Berry missed spring drills with leg injuries . . . . Why is it that the Ragin Cajuns have never had a dominant RB? The school’s career rushing leader is former QB Brian Mitchell.

NEW FACES: LB Trey Randall (Kilgore JC) had a decorated high school career in Houston.

    Game Story

Freshman Marion Barber III rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns in his first college start, leading Minnesota to a 44-14 win over Louisiana.

The son of former All-Big Ten running back Marion Barber Jr., Barber carried 26 times and scored on runs of nine and two yards in the second quarter to help the Golden Gophers (1-1) build a 17-0 lead.

Barber led a potent ground game for Minnesota, which rolled up 331 rushing yards and held the ball for nearly 33 minutes. Tellis Redmon added 95 yards on 14 carries and freshman Terry Jackson had 51 and a touchdown on 13 rushes.

The Golden Gophers bounced back from a season-opening 38-7 loss at Toledo and held Louisiana to 156 total yards, including 30 on the ground.

The Ragin' Cajuns (1-1) got on the board in the second quarter as linebacker Ricky Calais returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown.

After Dan Nystrom kicked a pair of field goals for Minnesota, Asad Abdul-Khaliq threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Antoine Henderson and caught a two-yard TD toss from Ron Johnson.

Louisiana's Jon Van Cleave was 18-of-35 for 126 yards. The Cajuns were facing a Big Ten Conference foe for the first time.

  5. UL Football Game 3 Louisiana 10 - Southern Miss 35

    PreGame writeup

Ex-Delta Devil directs Ragin' Cajun project

    By Henry Goolsby
    Clarion-Ledger Staff Writer

A win over Southern Miss this weekend could lift Jerry Baldwin and his young Louisiana-Lafayette program to new heights.

Baldwin, a former Mississippi Valley State quarterback, is in his third year as head coach of the Ragin' Cajuns.

And his 3-19 overall record at the school would get a significant shot in the arm by knocking off the Golden Eagles Saturday at 5 p.m. at Lafayette.

However, Baldwin said Wednesday that he felt no pressure to win immediately.

"I didn't mess the program up; they hired me to fix it," Baldwin said. "I inherited a team that was decimated. I only had 49 players, and that includes walk-ons and scholarship players.

"We're on the right track. We have some young kids, but we'll get it done."

If UL, 1-1, gets it done against USM, 1-0, it will have to do so with seven sophomores starting on defense.

But there is hope, considering 10 defensive starters return from a year ago.

USM beat the Ragin' Cajuns 48-0 the last time the two teams met (1998). It was Baldwin's first year at the school.

And dominance over UL didn't start there. The Golden Eagles have averaged 36.2 points in seven games against the Ragin' Cajuns in the 1990s, compared to 15 points per game by UL.

Baldwin, however, is more concerned with USM quarterback Jeff Kelly and a variety of targets in his receiving corps. Then there's what looks to be another potentially stingy USM defense on the other side of the ball.

"USM is a real good football team," said Baldwin, whose staff also includes fellow Natchez native and former Alcorn State standout Cordell Bailey (tight ends coach). "They're a very aggressive and physical team, and they give you a lot of multiple looks on defense.

"I think they can score points, and they play the game the way it should be played.

"We have our hands full with this team."

Win or lose, Baldwin has the support of USM coach Jeff Bower.

"I think Jerry has done a good job there," Bower said. "He took that program when it was really down, and to build a program just doesn't happen overnight.

"You go through some growing pains and some tough times. I can relate to the situation from the first few years I was here. Even though I took over a successful program, we hadn't recruited very well, didn't have much speed on the team and it showed.

"I hope people will be patient with him, because he'll do a good job for them."

Baldwin, 47, played at Valley from 1971-75. He began his 16-year college coaching career in 1983 as an assistant at Louisiana Tech.

He moved on to LSU in 1993 and was instrumental in helping develop an LSU defense that rose from last place in the SEC in 1993 to the league's top ranking in 1994.

For Baldwin, this game against USM could be the defining moment for not only his team, but his career.

"A win over USM would be huge for our program, and it would be great for our confidence," he said. "When you believe in what you're doing, you're not moved by anything. You just keep doing it."

Baldwin insists that in the big picture, his mission is simple.

"You win with Jims and Joes, and not with X's and O's," he said. "We just have to recruit and to get more Jims and Joes in here."

    Post Game Story

LAFAYETTE, Louisiana (Ticker) -- Jeff Blackwell, a converted
wide receiver, rushed for 78 yards and three touchdowns on 25
carries, leading Southern Mississippi to a 35-10 victory over
    Louisiana.

Blackwell handled the bulk of the running game for the Golden
Eagles (2-0) after gaining just 25 yards in his first appearance
at the position two weeks ago against Oklahoma State.

Blackwell opened the scoring on a 16-yard run, then added a pair
of one-yard TDs, helping Southern Mississippi build a 24-7 lead
    early in the third quarter.

Jeff Kelly overcame four sacks to complete 17-of-29
for 243 yards and a touchdown.
The Rajin' Cajuns also sacked backup Zac White twice.

Kelly capped the scoring with a one-yard TD toss to Bobby Garner
with 10:26 remaining in the contest.

After the Goldem Eagles jumped to a 17-0 lead, UL got
its only touchdown on Jerome Coleman's 42-yard run with 7:15 to
    go in the first half.

Southern Miss held the Rajin Cajuns to only 144 total yards,
including just seven on the ground.

John Van Cleave, who completed just 10-of-39 for 137 yards for
UL, threw three interceptions and was sacked four times.

Southern Miss has won six straight over UL to increase
its lead in the all-time series to 37-11-1.

    It's Offensive! Cajuns Outgun Vandals

    Louisiana-Lafayette Sports Information

The Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns traveled to Pullman, Wash. on Saturday to face the Idaho Vandals. Both teams entered the contest in search of their first Sun Belt Conference victory.

Offense is the story anytime Idaho takes the field, and Saturday’s game was no exception. Louisiana-Lafayette set schools records for most offensive yards from scrimmage and most passing yards. The Cajuns were able to outgun the Vandals en route to a 54-37 victory.

Preseason All-Sun Belt quarterback John Welch returned to the Vandals line-up for the first time since being injured Aug.30. Although his return resulted in an immediate impact, Cajuns quarterback Jon Van Cleave stole the show.

Van Cleave broke Jake Delhomme’s six-year school record of 371 yards passing, passing for 407 yards and three touchdowns. Offensively, Louisiana-Louisiana could do no wrong, collecting a school record 641 total yards.

Welch came out firing on the game’s first play and hit his tight end Luke Smith-Anderson for a 54-yard gain down to the Cajuns 26. The Cajuns forced the Vandals into consecutive third down and six situations, but Idaho responded by picking up the first down both times. Anthony Tenner put the Vandals on the board with a 3-yard touchdown run. Keith Stamps added the extra point, and Idaho led 7-0.

The Cajuns offense came right back with a 65-yard drive in 4:26, culminating in a one-yard touchdown run by Jerome Coleman. Nick Dugas entered the game at quarterback on third and goal to handed the ball to Coleman.

Welch passed Idaho down the field on their next possession and then let Tenner run it in from one-yard away. The Vandals covered 80 yards in nine plays to reclaim their lead at 14-7.

On the Cajuns next possession, Van Cleave scrambled for seven yards before hitting Fred Stamps with a 49-yard pass into Vandal territory. The drive’s next play saw Nick Dugas on the receiving end of a 28-yard touchdown pass by Van Cleave. Dugas and Stamps broke tackles, gaining yards after the catch, helping the Cajuns tie the game at 14-14.

The see-saw battle continued as Idaho moved the ball down the field on their next possession. As the first quarter was set to expire, Peter Villia intercepted a Welch pass at the Cajuns two and returned the ball out to the Cajuns 28. Van Cleave’s passing and Ivan Taylor’s running helped the Cajuns move down to the Vandal’s one-yard line. Dugas came in at quarterback once again, only to hand the ball off to Coleman again, who picked-up his second touchdown of the game and seventh of the season. Louisiana-Lafayette led for the first time in the game, 21-14.

Van Cleave engineered a beautiful drive following the Vandals first punt of the day. The sophomore quarterback did everything right on the way to a 20-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Wilridge. The Cajuns enjoyed a 28-14 lead.

Idaho answered quickly, as Tenner rushed for a three-yard touchdown just 3:04 later. The Cajuns lead was cut to just 28-21.

Just before the half, the Cajuns marched 84 yards in 2:30 to reclaim their 14-point lead, 35-21. Donovan Morgan caught a ten-yard touchdown pass, his first of the season, with just seven seconds left in the half.

The second half started terribly for the Cajuns. Van Cleave’s shovel pass was intercepted and returned to the Cajuns two-yard line. Just as Idaho appeared to be moving in for the score, the Cajuns defense stepped it up. The Vandals tried to run the ball up the middle four straight times, but were denied.

Louisiana-Lafayette took possession on their one-yard line. Jerome Coleman looked to be tackled for a safety five-yards deep in the end zone, but somehow found a hole and rumbled 61 yards down the sideline to the Vandals 38. The Cajuns were forced to punt after a sack, but Knott’s first punt of the game was downed on the one-yard line.

A holding penalty in the end zone, by rule, gave the Cajuns credit for a safety.

Idaho cut the lead to eight after Welch hit Christopher Belser on a 17-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter. The quarterback ran the ball into the end zone for the two-point conversion.

As the third quarter expired, Van Cleave hit Fred Stamps on a 37-yard connection down to the Vandals one. The fourth quarter began with Nick Dugas in at quarterback. The Cajuns ran the same play, as Dugas handed off to Coleman, who converted his third touchdown from one-yard out.

A Knott 38-yard field goal and Coleman’s fourth touchdown of the game was sandwiched between Welch’s second touchdown pass of the game to Belsner.

Next week the Cajuns will return home for the first time since Sept. 29. Louisiana-Lafayette will celebrate its’ 56th homecoming when it hosts Louisiana-Monroe. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. (CDT).

Cajuns Knott Named Sun Belt Special Teams Player of the Week
    Sports Information

Louisiana kicker/punter Jonathon Knott was named the first ever Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week. The award is voted on by a select panel of football media in Sun Belt Conference cities.

"This feels pretty awesome," said Knott. "Coming from a junior college, this is a big deal to me. I've been waiting to play Division I football my whole life. I'm just trying to live up to everyone's expectations and my own."

The junior college transfer from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M accounted for eight (2 FG, 2 PAT) of the Cajuns twenty points on Saturday against Nicholls State. Knott's two field goals total two-thirds of what the Cajuns produced during the entire 2000 season. In addition, Knott's 45-yard blast marked the longest field goal by a Cajun since Mike Shafer hit from 46 yards on Nov 4. 1995.

"Hopefully 45 yards won't be my longest kick of the year. All I'm looking for is consistency. If my teammates and I play the way we did on Saturday, things will go well for us."

As a punter, Knott kicked five times for 194 yards (38.8 avg). Not one of Knott's punts was returned and one landed out of bounds, trapping Nicholls inside their own five-yard line.

"To have Jonathon Knott means so much to us in several areas," said head coach Jerry Baldwin. Having someone who can kick a field goal is refreshing and his punting really helps our field position."
