I agree. Like I said, the girls that I was able to identify as local area girls represented the Acadiana area well. My granddaughter would love to play at UL but unfortunately I don't think that that will happen. I did eavesdrop on a couple of guys sitting in front of me (I assume that they were travel team coaches because they had team gear on) talking about an STM girl participating at the camp who apparently is on the radar of Alabama, Arizona, Mississippi State and UL. I don't know anything about this girl but it would be great if Lotief were able to keep her in-state.

I'm pretty sure she is the girl who took over Shellie Landry's reign of terror at STM. Her mom is a huge UL fan, doesn't miss a Cajun softball game and preaches everything UL. The girl is only a freshman. I'm not sure if I am allowed to say names, so I won't at this time. However, on her present pace, she will hold every softball record at STM by the end of her STM softball career. And yes, I hope Michael has her on his radar like everyone else.

Grandpa, I believe that the STM girl that you are talking about is a freshman whose last name is Hemfield (?). I saw her play earlier this summer at a tournament. She cranked 2 out on my niece who is a pretty decent pitcher so I have first hand knowledge of her power. I believe that she is already on Lotief's watch/wish list if what I have been told is correct. I agree with everyone who has posted that it would be great if UL could get the exceptional local talent to stay here though this could sometimes be a hard sell if there is much national interest in a girl.

I think Shellie's younger sister had a pretty good season as a junior (I think) this year as well. I think before the Sulphur portion of the tournament, she may have been the better hitter during the year.

It is my understanding that Sarah Arceneaux, Landry and Hemphill all had double digit homeruns this year. The long ball power displayed by this team was unbelievable and may never be matched again. However, in talking with one of the STM coaches this past weekend, I was told that it was Hemphill who led STM in every hitting statistical category. It will be interesting to see if and how teams pitch to her next year.

I coached the girl's basketball team at St. Pius a few years back when Bailey was a 6th grader. She started for the 8th grade team and showed athletic ability beyond her age. It is not surprising she has had success on the diamond as well. She will continue to develop and will be very dangerous by the time she graduates

High school softball is alive and well in Acadiana. STM, Teurlings, Notre Dame, North Vermilion, Cecilia, Kaplan and Comeaux all have some fantastic players returning next year. There are many dedicated girls in the area that will be working hard this summer to get stronger, faster and better through workouts and/or playing travel ball.

In regards to STM, everything just seemed to click for them this year and especially in Sulphur. Sarah Arceneaux and Jaimie Landry both stepped up big time. Sarah will be hard to replace. I wish her much success in continuing her playing career at UL and look forward to watching her play at the next level.
