Figured it out yet? The SBCE group wants geographical leverage. When that day comes, not if, when, they’ll break away since they will go as a collective group and have a voting majority. UL is now the longest trip for many of the SBCE. Suddenly, UL isn’t as attractive to those programs.
For some reason the SBC fanboys here don't understand that if ECU became available tomorrow, by next Monday the SBC east would break away forming their own 8 team ACC lite. UL, stAte, USM, Troy, USA and ULM would then need 2 teams just to stay alive. Being loyal to a G6 conference is huge mistake for any administration; be loyal to the folks that pay your bills, and always be striving to get in a better conference where fan experience will be better.
For me, that conference right now is the PAC because football is at least on par with the SBC and basketball is so much better that it is not even in the same universe as SBC hoops. The stick and ball sports are not as good, but then again, it is unlikely that we are going to be relevant in those either going forward.
I will give you that CSU and USU won't excite our football fans, but Boise, Fresno and SDSU certainly will; and only morons would prefer the SBC to the PAC in mens' basketball.
In hoops, Gonzaga [8], USU [37], Boise [44], CSU [47] and SDSU 52] were all ranked above the top AAC school UNT [65], and OSU [85] was also better than the top SBC school, stAte [94]. Only Washington State [112] and Fresno [278] fell below stAte, and even Fresno was better than 5 SBC schools.
So in other words ECU was fools.purple and gold from our perspective??
Imagine that purple and gold screwing us again.....
