You are partially correct. By the way men's hockey is third behind football and men's basketball in NCAA revenue.

Keep in mind that MLB has a later opening day than NCAA baseball. If the Northern schools had their way NCAA baseball wouldn't start until April or May. The reason their is a common opening date for NCAA baseball now is because the Northern schools moaned and complained enough to the NCAA that they got their way but it still isn't good enough for them.

Weather may be more of a factor for northern college teams than you may think.

MLB goes south for all of spring training and preseason. They do that because it is cold up north. They do not start playing games up north until the start of the season which is about now.

College has completed all of its pre-season practices and has completed about half of their regular schedule by this time. They are at a competitive disadvantage because of weather.

For the Northeast part of the country average latest snowfall for areas on the southern edge is March and for more northern regions is April. First snowfall is typically November or December. So playing into October is rarely an issue for MLB. On the flipside a February start for NCAA is almost always an issue for Northern schools.

They face the same problem up north with college baseball as the Deep South does with basketball,a sport played inside, people don’t really care. Not every college baseball team borders Canada. People up north are more interested in basketball, football, hockey and mlb. Having no hockey and no mlb team between Houston and Atlanta leaves a huge baseball void..where would all those people in that region fill that void? College Baseball. Pull up a map of MLB teams and see why college baseball isn’t popular/good in the north.

Those are some good points. However the weather is a factor in why people up north don't care about college baseball. It is an issue from Kentucky on up. It is too cold for night games until mid April which kills support as the sport starts in mid to late February. For whatever reason, the fact that the northern areas don't care about baseball does make it easier for southern mid majors to gain at large bids in baseball. The fact that it is almost impossible to do in basketball is a reason people care less about that sport. That is a factor in why baseball interest is up and basketball interest is down. However SEC basketball had some good teams this year and their support was up. It is not an issue throughout the south. It is an issue almost solely for mid majors which are the majority of schools. Baseball wise, that advantage is not a factor for us this year. We have to win our tournament.

The fact is, take Florida, ole miss, Oregon State players and dress them in Michigan, Ohio State and Illinois unis amd Ipromise you people will be interested and will sit through whatever weather they have to. There is no interest because the teams aren’t as good. You might not want to admit it but people are losing interest in basketball in the deep
South because our teams aren’t as good. People pay hundreds of dollars to watch the Cleveland Browns in December, they would go watch a good baseball team...they aren’t interested.

Typical internet "conversation". I'm right and your wrong. This isn't black or white. You have a point but you also seem to be insistent that weather is a complete non-issue. Go look around and you will find plenty of articles from college coaches that disagree with that statement.

Never said it’s a complete non issue, but i don’t see it as THE reason northern teams aren’t as good like mike originally suggested. Much more of an excuse as to why Ohio state can’t field a better team than SLU or UL. They certainly have the budget to come get southern players. Seriously, go look at the map of MLB and NHL teams and see why college baseball is popular where it is and where it isn’t.

In the past Robichaux has thanked RaginPagin (in the baseball media guide) for the research on Alvin Dark.

I handed him the newfound (previously forgotten) research personally, and it made it's way to the media guide.

    Fair and balanced.
