And now for something completely different, and essentially meaningless.
Both the University of Louisiana and Stephen F. Austin are on a season-best roll in their respective conferences, and both are battling for seeded spots in their league postseason tournaments. Neither team is going to reach the NCAA Tournament unless they capture that league tournament title.
So now, the Cajuns and the Lumberjacks are stuck playing a non-conference game two weeks before those tournaments.
"Face it, this is a game that both of us would rather not play," said SFA coach Danny Kaspar.
But UL and SFA will lock horns anyway, at 4 p.m. today at the Cajundome, matched up by ESPN's BracketBuster but not one of the precious few games selected for television.
The BracketBuster pool included 100 teams at the start of the season, with those 100 knowing they would be matched up against non-conference competition this weekend. Only 13 games and 26 teams were picked for TV meetings, leaving the other 74 in a mish-mash of matchups that have little bearing on post-season hopes and no bearing on league races that are reaching their zenith.
