1976 was Louisiana's first season back from the NCAA mandated death penalty that had lasted for the 1974 and 1975 seasons.

Thanks to 8 players Dale Lyles, Pascal Mitchell, Jerry Mitchell, Clay Johnson, Ted Lyles, Raymond Johnson, Rauol Robinson and Terry Ripka who returned from a practice squad the year before, basketball at Louisiana hit the court running.
