Although I am still not sure of the inner-workings of how this comes about, I would think the Sun Belt Conference in conjunction with its member schools could work together toward making this a reality. In the world of recruiting both students and student/athletes, exposure is everything - and fans like myself, the universities and the students and athletes are the beneficiaries.
The only way that would work would be for all subscriptions to go though the Sun Belt office. I will bring it up with Mr. Waters next time we have lunch.

Subject: Broadcasting Sun Belt Games on Satellite Radio

    Dear Rob:

What is being done to get ALL Sun Belt games on Sirius Satellite Radio? I got a subscription to Sirius a month ago at Christmas and have enjoyed listening to the sporting events. I know the SEC and other conferences are on it. I am ignorant to how Sirius contracts with schools and/or conferences to broadcast their sporting events. It just seems to me that in this competitive business of recruiting students and student/athletes, exposure is everything. With the technology available to reach the populous thru satellite radio, I hope that the Sun Belt Conference and its member schools are working together to make this a reality.

My son pitches for UL and was the winning pitcher against Southern University in the Tulane Regional this past season. Other than the local radio station in Lafayette, the Internet is the only altenative to hear games when out of range of the local stations. I am sure all the fans at all the other Sun Belt schools have this same problem. I am sure that you recognize this cutting edge technolgy is a huge media relations advantage and I would encourage you to pursue this avenue with all your vigor.

    Sincerely,

    Jeff Moody

    Jeff,

I couldn't agree with you more regarding cutting edge technology. Currently, our contract (like the most other conferences involved with Sirius) is in basketball. One issue we are currently facing is getting all of our schools to upgrade their technology.

For games to be broadcast on Sirius, a school's radio station must use an ISDN line (essentially a high-tech phone line) either at the arena or through their station. Louisiana-Lafayette does not use an ISDN line at this time. We are encouraging all of our schools to be involved with this, as obviously it is a great way to garner more national publicity.

However, ISDN lines do cost more than the normal phone lines and some of our schools are not at that point yet. We are continuing to encourage our schools to jump at this and hope to get everyone on board as soon as possible.

Good luck to your son this year. He's certainly in good hands with Coach Robichaux.

    Rob,
Thanks for your response and the info. I will continue to do whatever I can to encourage our fans and UL to get on board with this technology. Keep up the good work!
    Jeff

In other words he sounds a lot like the FEMA guys. No. getting all of the schools will not in and of itself get all or a great many more games on this media. If it would we would be doing it. No promises just platitudes.
