Ladies and Gentlemen, this is going to be a very important vote and possible history making events could follow!

I am interested in an UPDATE to the Battle for a name INFO. The main body will not change but some of the school stats will. Number of students, Foudation Deposits, Athletics, University status SERB, Doctoral II National Research Intensive and all that stuff. Rankings in Nursing, Computers, etc.

If anyone would like to either discuss this in a meeting or in a closed chat area, I think updating the info then puting it in the Advertiser and Verm would go a long way.

I feel a little ashamed and disloyal, but I'm going to stick to my comment. I would have expected them to pursue the reversal of this injustice until their last breath. They better have something up their sleave. Perhaps since Blanco is in office, they want to be able to say they are pursuing it because the students demand it, not because they perceive an advantage.

i'm all for being the University of Louisiana. However, we need to be made aware of the money envolved in this. While I think the name change would be a good thing I'm not for spending huge ammounts of money that could be spent on other things that the school needs. Like new buildings for some of the colleges, more professors or normal operational hours.

  4. Research Students get chance to weigh in on university name debate

Six name changes are part of the history of the university that has called Lafayette home since 1900.

University of Southwestern Louisiana, its name until 1999, was deemed too regional. Now, some students feel that the University of Louisiana at Lafayette doesn't set the school apart as a major university in the state.

So next month, when students vote on new student government leaders, they'll be asked what they think their university should be known as now - University of Louisiana at Lafayette or the University of Louisiana.

"We wanted to pose the question to the student body - 'Do they think the name of our university - University of Louisiana at Lafayette - says who we are and where we are now as an institution of higher education?' " said Trumaine Thomas, president of the Student Government Association.

If enough students want to see the change, student government will write a resolution asking the university's president, Ray Authement, to take the necessary steps to instigate an official change, Thomas said.

"We want to bring him numbers," Thomas said. "We have 17,000-plus students. We don't feel that (UL Lafayette) represents who we are now. We have grown in our institution and our population has also grown. We have achieved national recognition."

But there are some students who feel that the name University of Louisiana at Lafayette suits the school just fine.

This is a student vote because the students took the initiative to vote, not because the administration wanted us to. We want to take this vote not only to encourage the administration to continue the effort, but also to give them some concrete evidence that they can use to strengthen their arguing point.

It seems as if I had inadvertantly misstated fact in my prior post. Below is the factually correct paragraph.

    *****

The reasoning is clear. The name of our university should be officially changed to “The University of Louisiana” because of the prevailing custom around the nation. Specifically, that the oldest and largest of two or more universities sharing the name “University of State” be referred to as “The University of State.” Our state does not have an official “University of Louisiana,” but it does have two universities that share the name. Our university is the older and larger of the two. In fact, we are the second largest university in the state. Because we are the oldest and largest school with the name University of Louisiana, we should be referred to as “The University of Louisiana.” It would do nothing but good for the area and the state.

But you also have to realize that in these elections, less than 1% of the student body actually votes. To me thats not overwhelming in any sense. What are they gonna say to the legislature? "well less than 1% of the students want this, but thats an overwhelming majority of the voters" The representives would laugh them out of the capitol.

Are you a student? Do you realize for there would have to be less than 150 votes for it to be 1%? What kind of point are you making?

While it is still a low turnout, the eletions usually bring in between 2 and 3k. Now I was not a math major, but that is between 15 and 20% roughly. Many universities and colleges do not normally spit our more than 50% of a student body in a vote.

Here is a note if you write of this in "Ragin Opinion"

Note how the courts ignored the case of State v. Smith, 209 La. 363, 24 So.2d 617 (1945), where the Supreme Court stated that "the constitution is the paramount law, to which all other laws must yield, and its provisions must prevail over an act of the Legislature which is in conflict therewith."

The CONSTITUTION granted "Supervision and Management" rights to the Board of Trustees for State Colleges and Universities. The courts district and appeals (supreme remanded) ruled that the constitution was not specific enough so correct applicable designations cannot be considered a part of managing.

My contention is that what the courts eventually came up with was the equivalent of getting permission to "GO" to the restroom and then getting reprimanded because you didn't actually have permission to "USE" the restroom.

    Makes sense.

Also the University of Louisiana has consistently been the "2nd largest" State run University since 1939.
