New owner Jay Ridgeway is beginning a new semi-pro football team in the North American Football League, and will be holding tryouts at Moore Park, Field 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 4, 11, 18 and 25.
The season is scheduled for June 6 through Aug. 10. The Hurricanes will be part of a 12-team Gulf Coast Division, which also features teams in Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas and Louisiana.
The team will be coached by Gershom Joiner and Marcus Milton, and will primarily be made up of former high school football players not ready to end their careers. Ridgeway says he's been recruiting players throughout the state.
He said he's got his own team busses for travel, and that an agreement has been made to play the team's game at Northside High.
