BIRMINGHAM - UA assistant coach Jessie Evans was named head basketball coach at Southwestern Louisiana over the break. He will begin with the Ragin' Cajuns as soon as Arizona completes its season.
"This is a great experience for myself and my career. I am looking forward to it," Evans said. "They are going to give me a lot of freedom and it looks to be a good situation."
The decision was made by USL athletic director Nelson Schexnayder while the Wildcats were competing in Memphis, Tenn. in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
"From the first contact we had, Jessie Evans expressed a burning desire to be at USL and lead the Ragin' Cajuns," Schexnayder said. "It was obvious from the start that it was extremely important to him and that he had the desire and the interest in becomi ng a part of our program."
Evans, who has been credited with Arizona's success in recruiting, has also served on the staffs at Texas, Wyoming, San Diego State and Minnesota.
