Children playing with a lighter found inside a home causes a early morning house fire.
It was just before 8:30am when the Scott Fire Department received the call of a fire at 207 Topeka Road, in the Scott area. Upon arrival, firefighters found the mobile home on fire with flames consuming a majority of the structure.
Firefighters quickly made entry into the structure in an effort to extinguish the blaze. The blaze was brought under control, within seven minutes; however the structure received major damage.
An investigating showed that the home was occupied by a married couple and their two grandchildren at the time of the fire. The two children ages 3 and 5 were playing with a lighter found inside the home, igniting the bed on fire. The grandparents tried to extinguish the blaze with an extinguisher, but were unsuccessful.
In addition to losing their home to fire, the only clothing salvable, was the clothing which they were wearing at the time of the fire. The family is in need of clothing with the sizes being:
Boys size 4 and 5
Female size 16 / large shirt
Male size 32 30 / large Shirt
The clothing can be dropped off at the Scott Fire Station on Lions Club Road (next to City Hall) on Monday from 8AM- 4PM.In addition to losing their home and belongings, the family had no family in the area or anywhere to go for shelter. The Scott Fire Department would like to thank Holiday Inn Express (located in Scott) for providing the family temporary shelter.
There were no injuries as a result of the fire.
Units from Judice and Duson responded to assist with the extinguishment.
