    Beat me to it...

LAFAYETTE – University of Louisiana at Lafayette head football coach Rickey Bustle has agreed to a two-year contract extension, keeping him on the sideline through the 2010 season, the university’s athletics department announced on Wednesday.

As per university policy, financial terms of the contract will not be disclosed.

Since taking over the Ragin’ Cajuns football program in 2002, Bustle has seen his winning percentage increase each season culminating with a 6-5 record during the 2005 season for the program’s first winning season since 1995.

He also guided the Cajuns to a share of the Sun Belt Conference championship this past season directing a unit that ended the campaign with five straight wins. The team’s current win streak is the seventh (7th) longest active win streak in the nation amongst the 119 Division I-A football programs.

Bustle, a former offensive coordinator at Virginia Tech, was hired by UL in December 2001 to revive a program that had won only nine games in the previous five seasons (1997-2001). The Summerville, S.C., native has provided results for the Cajuns faithful as UL has already compiled 17 victories through his first four seasons (2002-2005).

During his tenure Bustle has seen three of his student-athletes drafted by NFL teams and a six others sign free agent deals. Charles Tillman (Chicago Bears), Ike Talyor (Pittsburg Steelers) and C.C. Brown ( Houston Texas) were all Bustle-coached players taken in the NFL Draft with Tillman being selected as the 35th pick in the 2003 draft making him the highest draft pick in school history.

Bustle’s system has produced 20 All-Sun Belt Conference selections - the most recent being eight selections during the 2005 season. It marked the most all-conference selections for Louisiana-Lafayette since 11 Cajuns were named to the 1995 All-Big West team.

The Ragin’ Cajuns will enter year five under Bustle in 2006. The season begins on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, against Louisiana State University at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge.

    Are you kidding me???

Why does this guy keeping getting extensions?? The whole state wanted to fire him after his 1-5 start...yeah, he led his team to the heavenly SunBelt "TRI"-Champions....WOOPTY-FRICKEN DOO!!! Im not saying that he didnt do a good job, but he needs to prove something worth talking about, at least a bowl appearance or something....SunBelt "TRI"-Champs is nothing to brag about people. He needs to prove something before we give him a lifetime salary here, after all, its not like he has any place better to go. He's def not getting offers from BCS contenders. We should take some of this money and give to Coach Robe or the Lotief's, or Lee.....people that have proven that they are winners and are making a name for the University on a NATIONAL level....No one cares about the SunBelt "TRI"-Champs that didnt even make a bowl. They have a little more consideration for the Baseball team that finished 3rd in the Nation, and a contender every year. Or the Softball team that makes it to the WCWS and produces All-Americans. Or the Basketball team that is winning outright Championships, taking a Final Four team(Louisville) to the wire in the NCAA Tourney on CBS(National Television for one of the most watched sporting events of the year) and one that produces NBA Draft Picks, a team that is on the verge of breaking loose. With the support of more people, the basketball team could win one of those NCAA Tourney games and turn the corner that they have been stuck on for several years. Whats Bustle's extension gonna do?? We gonna take a share of the SunBelt again and go NO better than the New Orleans bowl??? Pretty impressive to play in the 1st Bowl game of the season, ____.....at least its better than SunBelt "TRI"-Champs and sitting home watching it played in your own stadium.

  4. Default Bustle here for the long haul

Rickey Bustle and his University of Louisiana coaching staff are in a dead period for football recruiting entering Christmas weekend, but there was some lively news coming from UL on Wednesday that should help secure more talent for the Ragin' Cajun program.

A 6-5 finish and co-championship of the Sun Belt Conference has earned Bustle a two-year contract extension through 2010, rewarding him for the school's first winning season in 10 years.

University policy prohibits disclosure of the contract's financial terms.

"I think it says volumes about our program," said Bustle, whose Cajuns won their last five contests after struggling to a 1-5 start.

"I don't know how many athletes and their parents have asked how long I'm going to be here. That's kind of a typical question during recruiting. Parents and kids want to know, and this brings it (the contract) back up to five years.

"It's a statement for us. It's big to the recruits. Nothing is guaranteed, but it's big to know you'll be here while they're playing."

    Are you serious?

Tell me one thing, who do you want that will be better? WE finally have a coach that puts a competative product on the field. Not to mention, knowing that school has the backing of a coach plays very well for recruiting.

First of all... don't compare basketball and football. The difference in money, number of quality players and effort that it takes to play against the big boys in football is sooooooooo much higher than in basketball. Case closed!

As far as what Coach Bustle has done for us in football, if you don't think being at the top of the SunBelt is an improvement, you haven't paid attention the last 10 or so years. We were argueably the worst football program in the country. We are now where near that right now. To get to where we have a chance at other bowl appearances will take a few more years... as it did for Southern Miss and Memphis and others. We sucked so much when he got here as compare to now... he is well worth the extension!

I think this was a good move on the part of Louisiana. I feel a sigh of relief that the university is starting to move forward to assure we keep our coaches, like Coach Hall and others. Others, like, Stefni Lotief and Tony Robichaux ( Life time committment as far as I am concerned.)

I believe UL Athletics will dominate the major sports in the Sunbelt in the next 5 years.

    Hmmmmmm. Nothing worth bragging about?

How about taking the worst team in the history of college football and making them a winner?

I have to agree. Bustle is a good coach, and a great fit at UL. I think this program is on the right track.
