. . . signing with head coach Tony Robichaux on Thursday, the second day of the NCAA's early-signing period, were standout catcher Dillon Guillory of Teurlings Catholic and outfielder/first baseman Travis Whipple of Morgan City-Central Catholic. Pitcher Randall Bulliard of Opelousas-Westminster Academy signed with the Cajuns on Wednesday.
"I really like this group," Robichaux said. "We're continuing to bring in young players and young arms. We had a lot of success last year bring in young guys early and letting them mature in the program. If you sign a really good junior college player, he may only be here one year, so with these guys we're confident they will be a part of the program for a long time."
Guillory said that the elder Robichaux's reputation for working with the battery was important in his decision.
"He's got the pitchers and catchers, and he teaches catchers how to call their own game," said Guillory, who hit .387 as a sophomore and .380 as a junior. "He teaches what to look for in other hitters and the little things that make yo a better catcher, and that's something I'd like to learn.
"I watched Danny Massiatte play when they went to the World Series and I kind of idolized him, and I've seen what (Jonathan) Lucroy's doing now. I wanted to be a part of that."
Guillory helped lead TCHS to the 3A quarterfinals last spring, where the Rebels lost to finals-bound Notre Dame. Whipple, the younger brother of former Cajun pitcher Jeremy Whipple, heard all he needed to know about the UL program from his brother.
"He told me a lot of good things," Whipple said, "how good the program was and how much he liked coach Robichaux."
Whipple hit .508 in his junior year in helping Central Catholic win the state Class A title. CCMC beat Dunham in the Class A finals.
