No matter how you spin it, there is one undeniable conclusion that can be drawn from the end of the football season: The Ragin' Cajuns are the champions of the Sun Belt Conference.
Okay, so maybe they aren't the only champions, as they share that crown with UL Monroe and Arkansas State University. And maybe they won't be the Sun Belt representative in the New Orleans Bowl, but it was still one heck of a season.
The 54-21 trashing of the UL Monroe Indians was simply an exclamation point on the momentum surge that has been building up for the last month and a half, for numerous reasons.
First of all, the Cajuns' 6-5 overall record gives them their first winning record since 1995. For Cajun fans, those 10 years seemed like an awfully long time, but I'm pretty sure it was worth the wait.
Second, the Cajuns finally got their 1000-yard running back. With 164 yards in the game, Tyrell Fenroy finished the year with 1053 yards, becoming the first Cajun running back ever to break the 1000-yard barrier.
Third, the Cajuns ended the year on a five-game winning streak. The last time the Cajuns went on a longer streak was way back in 1993, when the Cajuns won six in a row en route to an 8-3 finish.
Finally, this year marks the Cajuns' first conference championship since 1994, when they won the Big West Conference.
All that said, let's not forget about the New Orleans Bowl. I know the Cajuns won't be going, but it's still very important for the Lafayette community to support this game.
