STARKVILLE — Dan Mullen vehemently denied a report today that he is expected to interview for the Penn State job in the coming days.

The Penn State affiliate of Rivals.com reported Friday afternoon, via tweet, that Mullen will interview for the job Monday.

When asked point blank if he will interview for the Penn State job Monday, Mullen said, succinctly, “No.”

Mullen, who denied a Jackson television report Tuesday that he was “close” to signing a deal with Penn State, admitted that he was tired of speaking about the reports linking him to Penn State. He said he was breaking “policy” when speaking with The Clarion-Ledger in a phone interview Friday about other schools and job openings.

“Amidst all of these reports, neither myself, my agent or the administration at Mississippi State University has been contacted by anybody at Penn State,” Mullen told The Clarion-Ledger. “I’m very happy of the direction the Mississippi State program is going in right now.”

I hear ya, but some people have the kind of integrity and patience that transcends the 'quick buck'. There's no reason to think that amount, or more, wouldn't have been available to him at a better program in a couple of years.

It's liable to be moot now anyhow. I guess we'll know more Monday.

Hope you all have a nice weekend.

But he hasnt built the program. Yet. He's built a team. It takes more time to build a program.

Having said that, I'll have no problem if he heads to Mississippi State.

I remember when Lou Holtz was at his last school before Notre Dame---In his contract was an arrangement that there wasn't a buy out or something like that if he left only to Notre Dame---Guess what happened????

Jay, I was not meaning to imply that he had, only that if he is that good, the SEC will eventually come for him.

There's also no guarantee that that kind of opportunity will be there in a couple years, or ever. And calling it a "quick buck" is a bit understating, no? That's life changing, generation affecting, type money and security. Most people with young families would do a whole lot more than compromise their integrity (although that's debatable) for that kind of opportunity.

Give the guy a break. He's become a prisoner of his own success, and he's yet to do anything for anyone to say one negative thing about the guy. If he leaves for an 8 figure deal elsewhere, good for him. Nobody in their right mind would turn that down, especially if it is to do the exact same thing they are currently doing, at a place that is near and dear to them. And even if it's somewhere else, if he's offered that kind of money, it's a no-brainer.

A "program" is a body of work and direction. Hud has pointed the program in the right direction, he just doesn't have a "body of work" yet.

I think some people are mistakenly believing that his journey to the SEC started with us. The guy has been in coaching for almost 20 years working towards that goal. He left a head coaching job to be an assistant at State to get this opportunity. While the timing is not good for us, it probably could not be better for Hud.

This is what gets me more than anything. I noticed in his coaching history, that he has had a few 1 year stints and then moved on.

    Central Arkansas (GA) 1992–1993

    Nicholls State (WR/TE/RB) 1994–1995

    Winston Academy 1996–1997

    Central Arkansas (DB) 1998

    Delta State (OC) 1999–2000

    Navy (OC) 2001

    North Alabama 2002–2008

    Mississippi State (WR) 2009–2010

    Louisiana–Lafayette 2011–present

My fingers were crossed that he would stay 3 yrs before moving on. 3 years of his recruits and a hopeful continuance of winning would have been nice

The fact the Hudspeth said Mullen "would do a really good job" at Penn State makes me nervous (as true as it may be). Good luck to both of them in whatever they choose, but my heart is obviously here in Lafayette.
