STARKVILLE — Dan Mullen vehemently denied a report today that he is expected to interview for the Penn State job in the coming days.

The Penn State affiliate of Rivals.com reported Friday afternoon, via tweet, that Mullen will interview for the job Monday.

When asked point blank if he will interview for the Penn State job Monday, Mullen said, succinctly, “No.”

Mullen, who denied a Jackson television report Tuesday that he was “close” to signing a deal with Penn State, admitted that he was tired of speaking about the reports linking him to Penn State. He said he was breaking “policy” when speaking with The Clarion-Ledger in a phone interview Friday about other schools and job openings.

“Amidst all of these reports, neither myself, my agent or the administration at Mississippi State University has been contacted by anybody at Penn State,” Mullen told The Clarion-Ledger. “I’m very happy of the direction the Mississippi State program is going in right now.”

Interesting choice of words there. Notice he said neither himself, his agent or the administration at Mississippi State has been contacted by anybody at Penn State. Didn't say anything about being contacted by a search firm on behalf of Penn State or that he never intended to interview there (or that he hadn't already done so).

In responding to a question whether he's interviewing Monday with Penn State, Mullen just said, "No." What about Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday or any other day besides Monday? It's one thing to say I'm not interviewing Monday and not interviewing at all.

Again, pay attention to the questions asked and the words used when it comes to coaching searches.

Oh, and Dan Mullen may not technically be a liar, but he is fancying his way around a straight answer. Josh is correct. Coaches and their agents have become masters of misleading language. Or, as my Aunt Bernice used to say "__ is a liar".
