Lafayette principal sues over contract

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - The principal of Northside High School has filed a lawsuit to force the Lafayette Parish School Board to extend his contract.
The Advocate reports Carlton J. Handy, who is on medical leave, has served as principal of Northside High School for 10 years, but his contract is set to expire on Jan. 7.
The school board approved Handy's current yearlong contract in January, but Handy argues in the lawsuit filed in the 15th Judicial District Court that state law requires contracts for tenured educators be for no less than two years.
The lawsuit asks a judge to order the School Board to extend the contract for at least an additional year, through January 2013.
