While I think Hud is a great coach and has done a great job here in only one year, let us not forget that most of the players were not his. I do not blame him for intervewing for other jobs. If the job is open that is when you have the chance to interview. I find it kind of hard to beleve that a BCS school would hire a first year head coach who came out 3rd in the sunbelt, got beat by a not so good ASU and got beat really bad by OSU. In 3 years with all the players being his, if he has won the sunbelt and his bowl games, I say thank you very much and good luck. While is is very possible he could go after this year, the sun will still come up and life will go on. Lets look at what we have and be thankful, tommorrow will be another day and we will deal with what it brings.

makes sense to wait a few days given Ole Miss asked and was granted permission to meet after season has been completed. If it's Freeze, Ole Miss is going the economy priced route vs higher price big name splash option. Nutt's 6MM+ contract payoff likely put a big dent in wallet.

6MM payoff not to work anymore......should have gone into coaching.

I can see your point, as well.. But I think Hud is smart enough to resist the temptation and to not to go to USM right now.

I'd think Ole Miss has a new coach in the next few days, either Fedora or Freeze. Fedora is also in play at Kansas, and Freeze is also in play at Memphis. Very fluid situation. Makes my head hurt. Odds that Hud leaves? Not in favor of the Cajuns if it's Miss St, 50-50 if it's USM.
I understand your point if he is offered. My question what is the chance of Hud being offered by either 'Ol Miss or Southern given his lack of history as a Div 1 HC?

Thanks. Knew that and had a brain fart... did tell those around me "Excuse me." Meant State and Southern should either of those open up.

Remember that HUD interviewed for the Miss State job and became their off coordinator------I would guess that all the Starkvillers love him---I know Johnny Boy does----No state job he is a Cajun---State open he is barking in Mississippi---he'll be Dog-gone!!!! This is a no Boner ahh Brainer!!!!

No idea. You'd have to ask the ADs of those respective schools. I just don't see it as a long shot. (Other than Hud pulled his name out of the Ole Miss running.) Notice that Malzahn and Smart are being mentioned as head coaching candidates yet have never been FBS head coaches. Malzahn was a head coach at the prep level, but Smart has never led a program. The fact Hud was successful as North Alabama's head coach from 2002-08 will be considered by any AD with a brain.

Hud was the receivers coach and passing game coordinator at Mississippi State.

I understand that. And, because he does have at least a limited history with State, he might be a front runner. But, he does have a limited history as a head coach. And, after the Orgeron fiasco, I wonder if they would be willing to take a chance on someone with little "big time" experience. If I'm State or 'Ol Miss, I have a very basic decision to make. Do I want to really compete in the SEC West with LSU, Bama, Auburn, and, now, even Arkansas. And, if I do, can I afford to? Can I generate enough extra income, even with some real success to pay to compete. If the answer is "Yes." then I won't a "name" of some dimension to get everyone excited and the fatcats to start putting up the money. If the answer is "No." then, as an up and coming and ambitous coach, do I want to put my future in that situation?

Literally every Mississippi State fan wants Hud or Manny Diaz. So we better hope if Mullen goes to PSU, Manny Diaz interviews like crazy.

Other than Tennessee, does anybody know of a time when a coach with one year of head coaching experience in what is generally considered to be the weakest FCBS conference, who has never served as a coordinator at a major school, and who came in third in this weakest of all conferences, has been offered a head coaching position at an AQ conference school?

Hiring a new coach is always a high risk proposition. There are way too many variables to ever be certain. But, it does seem to me that you want to minimize your chance of being wrong by hiring someone that has a lengthier resume of "big time" success than does Hud. I believe we have him for at least two and very likely three years before he is offered at an AQ conference school.

Of the openings or potential openings available, the one I worry about is if Southenr Miss became available. Going from UL to a school that size would be a normal and expected advancement, though again his having been a HC for only one year is a problem. I don't see UAB as a possibility, That school is a graveyard and I've seen nothing that the administration can or is willing to do what it takes to get better. If Tulane or Memphis are not serious about getting better, I can't see Hud going their. If they are serious, and want to prove it to their supporters (read fatcats), they will need to bring in someone with more successful experience than Hud.

Again, this is not a knock on Hud. Next year, or certainly the year after that is the most we can expect if he continues his success of this year. I just think it's too soon for a "big" program to come after him.
Although USM is ahead of us football wise, they are not a larger school. In fact when you compare
Lafayette and Hattiesburg, you wonder how they do it.
