I don't want this to sound the wrong way, but if the university is not charging an atheletic fee to students, then how are the students paying atheletic fees already? Students at Louisiana universities have some of the lowest tuitions in America & if a student resident passes TOPS they get their schooling for free. I do not like the idea of students getting charged an atheletic fee if they don't feel an association with sports. This would seem very counterproductive & is most likely what has caused students to rebel at other SBC schools.
But students who attend sporting events should be proud to be part of the support group. If ten dollars is killing your budget as a student, then you don't need to go to school, you need a job. If you already have a job, then you need to get a better one.
We don't have 92,000+ people constantly yelling throughout the game either. Making an entire team feel uncomfortable on their own sideline for the entirety of the game is just as great as making an opposing offense uncomfortable in scoring situations in one end zone.
I am in favor of adding chairbacks on the student side, just as long as it's not to the detriment of the stadium's energy level.
Edit: Just a to counter any potential counter-points, I know this is a necessary step of being "big time." We, as fans, need to be shown how to be big time. And that means not sitting down for half of the game, or being annoyed that someone in front of you is standing up.
They don't rebel at other SBC schools because of athletic fees. Those that don't have good overall attendance just don't have the fan support. And every student benefits from good athletics programs. When you get more national awareness of your school because athletics gives you that awareness, you benefit. When alumni take a stronger interest in the school because of athletics it helps the students. When the local community where they attend their college of choice supports the university due to athletics, it helps everyone affiliated with the university, including the students. So, whether you choose to attend those functions or not, you should help with the benefits you receive.
I do think charging students for tickets, directly, is counterproductive. It will steer 20 percent away from athletics for life. They are the seeds that grow the orchard. It's much easier to sell something as a 2 percent addition to an existing bill (that in 50 plus percent of the cases is paid for by someone else) than stick even a seemingly small bill in their face for the right to cheer for their team. You need to know students. You wouldn't believe how much they'd slice and dice their tuition if it came as a menu. 30 percent would stand instead of sit for every class if you gave them $10 for standing. And once you've given them something they think is "free" and you take it away... They'll act like socialists and try to occupy somewhere other than a job of their own.
Student fees for athletics should be charged to all students and should be labeled by their real name.
"University Diploma Marketing Fees"
The student fees include athletic events. Unless things have changed.
Checked the cost of an education at UL. Fees are included in the tuition, but are not listed as an independent item. At one time they were. So maybe they no longer pay directly for those seats.
We don't need drunk students distracting OUR team. They are perfect where they are. The home side just needs to learn to be into a football game the whole time, not just on 3rd downs. That will come as we win more and more hardcore football fans start coming to see great football. I've never been to games where poeple spend so much time walkin up and down the aisles not watching the game. It's a culture change we have to make, but it has begun!
