Thread: Louisiana will fight to keep Hudspeth

  1. Default Louisiana will fight to keep Hudspeth

They're willing to do what they can to keep Mark Hudspeth, a bona fide candidate for the Ole Miss head coaching vacancy -- and perhaps others.

But the Ragin' Cajuns' monetary resources stretch only so far, UL Athletic Director Scott Farmer suggested Monday night.

"we'll do everything we can to help him get the job."

Scott, you don't say things like that, at least not on the record.

Very strange...and inappropriate...comment. BS that I would actually help him get another job...especially after only ONE year.

I agree that it could have gone without saying. But the Athletic Director must be above board in these situations. He can't afford to be like an emotional fan and "kick his butt on the way out." Scott is doing what head coaches normally do when one of their assistants gets attention for a new job: they go on record saying how qualified they are and how successful they'd be.

Like I said, Scott probably didn't have to go that far. But it pays for him to not be bitter (especially publically).

I didn't say be bitter. I said it was just plain weird for him to say he would go so far as to help his first year coach get another job. I think that is different from a head coach helping or being happy for an assistant being promoted to a head coaching post or coordinator position.

I think we're saying the same thing? Maybe not...

There is a "glass half full" aspect for fans to take towards Mr. Farmer's comments given that he's gone on record as saying ULwill try as much as we can to keep the coach here. While we may not have the resources to go toe-to-toe in a bidding war with a SEC school, I don't think we're going let places like the C-USA schools come in and outbid us for a good coach. That's something that our history says we wouldn't have seen out of our prior administration.

I read the comment and thought it was definitely "public speak". Sure we want to keep him; but if an opportunity to move on to an SEC program arose, be the bigger person, say what a great job he has done, get all the positive props you can knowing your guy made it to the big show; and use that to get the next good coach. No way we compete financially with an SEC program. But that said, I strongly doubt that same feeling would apply to the Tulane or Memphis programs. Even to a degree, the Southern Miss position. I'm sure our AD sees our program as "equal" or even better than those (relative terms - not $$); and such a move would be far more lateral than moving up the food chain.

Its the right thing to do. Never had anyone tell you not to dog your exs or past bosses?

Hypothetically speaking... If Hud were to get the ole miss job and Mr. Farmer helps his transition... the next coach will see that. It makes us look good on all fronts.

I've heard other ADs make the same statement. The positive spin on such a statement is that it presents your program to up and coming coaches as a desirable place to be where they can have success and get noticed for the "big" jobs in the top conferences.

The flip side is your AD takes the stance that we will essentially hold a coach back. That would not be seen as an attractive situation to an aggressive, up and coming coach.

I don't want to lose Coach Hud after one year anymore than anyone else, but let's recall a year or so ago when all of us were decrying UL's reputation as a coach's graveyard and wanted to be a place where a coach could make his mark and move on.
