I am not a fan of getting into a bidding war with USM. If Hud does not see the potential here now, he will not see that potential when the next job offer comes along, so a bidding war is futile. If Fedora does not get the Old Miss job, it is a non-issue anyway. We cannot compete against SEC schools like Old Miss; if they want him, he is gone. (that is reality)
Here is what I think needs to happen: Try and raise our coach’s pay (whoever it is) to around 650K and the assistants accordingly. This will put us in line with "middle" mid-majors like La Tech and some of the C-USA schools. Commit to do the stadium improvements in a 2-4 year plan. Hud is a good motivator but so far he has built a team, not a program. We need a program builder and if he is not willing to be that person, then I think we will allow his departure. I do expect the results this team has produced this year will allow UL to find a better coach for the future. Right now if this job were advertised, I expect we would be astounded at the applicant we would get; especially with a salary in the range of 650K.
Coaches come and go but fans and alumni are here to stay, at least the non-fair weather variety. I think that whoever the coach next season is will do a good job and hopefully move us closer to having an excellent program so we will not be a one hit wonder. Hud is not the only person qualified and able to do that. Hopefully he returns, but if not, I am confident that our AD will find the right person to move forward.
BTW, Geaux Cajuns, beat Arizona today!
